In the first half of the 12th century, several military works were developed throughout the territories under Almoravid rule, above all after 1126, both in the main towns and the rural areas of the Empire. Within this context, the aim of this paper is to present the results achieved in the framework of the PREFORTI R&D Project (BIA2015-69938-R) concerning the particular case of these military constructions built in the region of Southeast Al-Andalus (Granada and Almeria, Spain). To achieve this aim, we have studied their remains during field work, as well as documentation contained in archives, written sources and historiography, focusing on the risks that affect their conservation. The analysis of six cases of study has been included, where a sample of the systematic method based on preventive conservation measures has been detailed in two particular cases: the walls of the Alcazaba Qad¯ıma (Granada) and the walls of La Hoya and Cerro de San Cristóbal (Almeria). The proposed method has been validated by the public bodies responsible for the protection of this heritage. This paper analyses the seismic vulnerability of various rammed earth medieval fortifications situated in Southeastern Spain, where seismic events with intensity over VII have taken place in the last millennium, using the vulnerability index method. This method begins with the choice of a certain initial value, V0, of the vulnerability index, which is obtained from a preset range between maximum, V0max, and minimum, V0min, values, which are likely for vulnerability indices, according to the constructive material characteristics and based on expert judgments. Rammed earth structures have not yet been studied using the vulnerability index method, despite the fact that they are quite common medieval structures in Spain and other countries in the Mediterranean region, many of which are also heritage sites, and hence are legally protected. Intervention priorities on them have been determined from the results in this paper with the aim of reducing their seismic vulnerability. For the different rammed earth techniques, a proposed primary value Vp = 0.76 together with some other material modifiers (construction typology and quality, current material porosity and density, and superficial deterioration) make the range of values V0 vary between 0.58 and 1.02. Moreover, structural behavior modifiers (MK) have been adapted to the various defensive rammed earth structural typologies used for these fortifications allowing us to obtain individualized vulnerability index values. Three rammed earth fortifications damaged by historical earthquakes and located in SE Spain have been used to validate the method, in which values of V0med range between 35.2 and 89.1% and upwards and the vulnerability index IVmed may vary between 27.9 and 70.7% and upwards as compared to those used by other authors for castles. Besides, the proposed method has been used by carefully choosing six rammed earth fortifications (two towers, two walls and two castles) in SE Spain which are representative of different construction systems, structural typologies and topographies. Furthermore, the mean damage grade and the probability of its occurrence is determined for each fortification based on PGA data and site effects, taking into account a probabilistic seismic scenario for a 975 year return period, in accordance with existing legislation. In the end, direct relations are established between the seismic vulnerability and the types of material and the typology of the fortifications. We have carried out a sensibility analysis in order to learn about the influence of the constructive technique, the material condition and the structural typology on the damage grade value. The results show that lime-crusted rammed earth technique and tower typologies are the most vulnerable structures while topography is somehow less important. The results suggest that for half of the structures analyzed for the given scenario the probabilities are above 80% for damage grade 4 and 5 (EMS-98). © 2020, Springer Nature B.V.

The aim of this work is to present the results obtained in the framework of the PREFORTI Project. The particular case analysed is the damages caused by earthquakes in the medieval fortifications of Almeria and the consequences on their conservation. Almeria is a zone of important seismic activity. This particularity has caused many problems to conserve its Islamic military architecture. Within this work, we include the most important earthquakes that have affected this heritage since the late fifteenth century and the constructions damaged –to a greater or lesser extent– by them, including their specific damages and an approach to their state of conservation. Due to its importance within the military constructions, we present the case study of the Alcazaba of Almeria and the wall of La Hoya, focusing on the second one. These paradigmatic constructions were widely affected by the earthquakes since the late fifteenth century. Beyond the analysis of the damages caused by the earthquakes and the different historical restorations to mitigate them, we include the emergency measures proposed in the framework of the PREFORTI Project for its better conservation against the different risks, as well as the microzonation mapping of the natural seismicity risk for the section of the wall of La Hoya in order to delve in the study of the vulnerability of this cultural asset against this natural risk, as a mechanism for its better preventive conservation. ; Universidad de Málaga. Medieval defensive earthen architecture is typically represented by big and well maintained defensive walls, lookout towers or castles despite mostly represented by remains of tower walls or defensive walls. While studies on natural hazards have been carried out concerning these castles or lookout towers, there are no studies on defensive walls. Both are certainly significant from a cultural heritage perspective, despite the fact that the latter are less popular for the general public. In Southeast Spain, most of this kind of architecture has been affected, and occasionally reconstructed, by destructive earthquakes and/or landslides, in accordance with historical chronicles or field evidence, however, there are no records of low-scale natural hazards. Hence, aware of the importance of the prevention of natural hazards regarding the conservation of the cultural heritage, a National Emergency and Risk Management Plan for the Cultural Heritage, a National Plan for Preventive Conservation as well as a National Plan for Defensive Architecture have been enacted by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. According to these plans, a risk charter, including natural and man-made hazards, should be completed in order to improve investment programming. Cultural heritage risk and cultural assets maps should be connected in order to become an instrument for managing preventive conservation. Natural hazards studies should be conducted in order to protect cultural heritage, though they are not usually performed, most likely due to their cost. However, some natural hazards studies have been published in scientific journals, mainly signed by university researchers or various Spanish research institutions such as the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain. Some of them, including the Spanish Seismic Network or the old Ministry of Environment (currently known as the Ministry for Ecological Transition), have published several hazard and risk maps which can be usually used in GIS format. Yet, most of them are not even known by researchers on cultural heritage due to the different administrative levels in charge of natural hazards. This study presents a methodology generated for the preventive conservation of defensive earthen architecture, applied to the case of the Lojuela Castle (Lecrin Valley, Granada, Spain). In the application of the designed protocol, a multidisciplinary analysis of its patrimonial characteristics and multidimensional evaluation was developed, applying the technique of qualitative consultation to a group of experts-the Delphi method. This methodology allowed us to relate the hazard factors and the vulnerability of the asset for each group of risks that affect it. The support of the method in with geographic information systems (GIS) has favored the production of predictive cartography and risk analysis-including the territorial dimensions and spatial interactions of the asset with the physical environment. This has facilitated the obtention of micro-zoning maps of each of the risks examined. The risk mapping in micro-zoning and the knowledge of the structure's vulnerability represents an important contribution to the future conservation and management of this heritage. They favor strategies that minimize the incidence of risks and allow the prioritization of the conservation actions with a minimum economic investment, creating an efficient maintenance program. This will facilitate the protection, conservation and valorization decisions by the administration and the competent bodies involved in the protection of these sites. © 2020 by the authors. This paper presents a model for the analysis of the earthen defense heritage of southeast Spain which has been developed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness PREFORTI R+D+i Project. The protocol configures a geo-referenced inventory which corresponds to the National Heritage Protection Plans. The catalogue is structured into two sections on the basis of the risk diagnosis. Phase I: Information regarding the asset´s heritage on the basis of standard parameters. Phase II: Information regarding its material, construction and structural characteristics, its state of conservation, the risk factors to which it is exposed, and its degree of vulnerability is incorporated into a GIS. This model explores, firstly, how heritage assessment and risk diagnosis can be improved with the inclusion of information from multidisciplinary sources and secondly, the effect that the implementation of ICT in heritage management has on sustainable preventive conservation strategies.
