THE END OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE WAS A MASSIVE DECLINE IN POWER OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD. FOR THAT REASON, IT WAS ALSO THE BEGINNING OF A PSYCHOLOGICAL CONFUSION WHICH HAS HARDLY YET BEEN RESOLVED. THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES THE GREAT RETREAT, A CLASS ADRIFT, DEBAUCHING EDUCATION, AND THATCHER'S IMPACT. IT CONCLUDES THAT ITS HISTORY COULD BE A SOURCE OF STRENGTH TO BRITAINS TODAY IF THEY CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THEIR PAST RATHER THAN TO REJECT IT, QUARREL OVER IT, OR BURY IT.

ANOTHER POLITICAL ERA HAS ARRIVED AND WITH IT A STYLE WHICH CAN BE DESCRBIED AS POPULISM. THIS ARTICLE STUDIES WHAT POPULISM IS AND WHY ITS VARIOUS MANIFESTATIONS DESTABILIZE EUROPEAN POLITICS JUST AT THE MOMENT WHEN THE COLLAPSE OF THE SOVIET UNION AND ITS EMPIRE IN EASTERN EUROPE SIGNALS AN END TO THE DANGER OF A MAJOR WAR. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS ENCOURAGING POPULIST POLITICS IN EUROPE TODAY WHICH ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE WHICH CONCLUDES THAT THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN POLITICS WILL REMAIN TURBULENT, UNTIL MOSCA'S POLITICAL CLASS REMEMBERS THAT IT MUST ADDRESS THE REAL PREOCCUPATIONS OF THE GOVERNED, AND THAT INSTITUTIONS ARE NOT MADE BY SUMMIT CONFERENCES ALONE, BUT ACCUMULATE AUTHORITY THROUGH HABIT AND USE OVER A LONG PERIOD.

A FUTURE EUROPE CAN ONLY BE FORESEEN IF WE CAN IDENTIFY WHAT THE PRESENT EUROPE IS. TO BEGIN BY RECALLING SOME ASPECTS OF ITS PAST IS ONE WAY INTO AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT REMAINS THE ENIGMATIC ENTERPRISE OF UNITING EUROPE. THE FIRST DRAFTS OF A COMMON MARKET IN EUROPE ARE EXAMINED, THEN THE POSTWAR COMMUNITY OF 1945. THE THREE PLANS FOR POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC INTEGRATION OF EUROPE AND THE PART THAT GERMANY PLAYED AND STILL PLAYS IS DOCUMENTED. THE ARTICLE CONCLUDES THAT ALTHOUGH IT WILL HARDLY BE WELCOMED BY BELIEVERS IN EUROPEAN FEDERALISM, THE FACT THAT GERMANY SHOULD BE THE CHIEF INSTRUMENT OF THIS TRANSFORMATION AND EVENTUAL RECONCILIATION IS TAKING SHAPE RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES.

"Conflict is everywhere-in our homes, at work, in our social media feeds. But conflict isn't inherently bad... in fact, it's a normal and healthy part of human relationships. Mediation expert Gabrielle Hartley argues that we've forgotten that disagreement is normal and even necessary in our relationships; instead, we've normalized a zero-sum approach to interpersonal conflict and prioritized "winning" at all costs. The Secret to Getting Along (and Why It's Easier Than You Think!) will help you reframe your approach to conflict, harness the power of storytelling, and transform your reactions to conflict and build cooperative, thriving relationships across all areas of your life"--

This book, first published in 1983, examines weapons standardisation as one aspect of NATO's efficiency. It analyses the economic arguments for weapons standardisation, the limitations of the analysis and the available evidence. A political economy or public choice approach is used, with its emphasis on policy developments in the political market place of voters, political parties, bureaucracies and interest groups. These agents are central to understanding the function of weapons procurement policy within the Alliance.
