La désintegration sociale, soit‐disant un corollaire de la transformation de la culture chez les Esquimaux et les Indiens du Nord canadien, n'est pas un phénoméne monolithique. L'application du concept d'Alexander Leighton a des etablissements abondamment peuples d'Indiens athapascans et algonquins et d'Esquimoux de l'Arctique oriental ne revele aucune association directe et simple entre le niveau de désorganisation sociale, d'une part, et d'autres variables potentiellement corrélatives comme l'importance du groupe, le pluralisme culturel, la pauvreté ou le changement social d'importance, d'autre part. Chacune des communautés désintégrées manifeste sa désorganisation d'une facon plutôt distincte et I'on peut parfois expllquer la sélection de manifestations spécifiques de déviance. Les valeurs sacrees et profanes et le maintien de responsabilités sociales cimentent les rapports de telle sorte que même les communautés assez désintégrées demeurent unies.
