An evaluation of the position of Muslims in US politics notes that the widespread Muslim support of the Bush-Cheney ticket in the 2000 presidential election contributed significantly to the Republican victory. The estimated six million Muslims living in the US represent a diverse assortment of ethnic, racial, linguistic, religious, political, tribal, & national identities. Changes in immigration patterns following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are examined, along with the impact on Muslim involvement in the political process of both the Gulf War, & the 1967 Israeli strike against Egypt, Syria, & Jordan. It is maintained that there was a shift in the message of Muslim activists from an isolationism that discouraged Muslim integration into US cultural life, to one encouraging participation in Western society in order to propagate Islamic values & save the US from social chaos. It is concluded that Muslims still lack political clout & many are beginning to feel betrayed by the Bush administration they believe they helped to elect. Continuing challenges to Muslim political action are described. J. Lindroth

(DÜI-Hns)
