" In Cicero's Use of Judicial Theater, Jon Hall examines Cicero's use of showmanship in the Roman law-courts, looking in particular at the nonverbal devices that he employs during his speeches as he attempts to manipulate opinion. Cicero's speeches in the law-courts often incorporate theatrical devices including the use of family relatives as props during emotional appeals, exploitation of tears and supplication, and the wearing of specially dirtied attire by defendants during a trial, all of which contrast strikingly with the practices of the modem advocate. Hall investigates how Cicero successfully deployed these techniques and why they played such a prominent part in the Roman courts. These "judicial theatrics" are rarely discussed by the ancient rhetorical handbooks, and Cicero's Judicial Theater argues that their successful use by Roman orators derives largely from the inherent theatricality of aristocratic life in ancient Rome--most of the devices deployed in the courts appear elsewhere in the social and political activities of the elite. While Cicero's Judicial Theater will be of interest primarily to professional scholars and students studying the speeches of Cicero, its wider analyses, both of Roman cultural customs and the idiosyncratic practices of the law-courts, will prove relevant also to social historians, as well as historians of legal procedure"--

Many organizational problems are addressed through change to existing Information Systems (IT) rather than radical new design. In the face of high incidence of IT project failure, devising effective ways to tackle this type of change remains an open challenge. The paper discusses the motivation, theoretical foundation, characteristics and evaluation of a novel framework, referred to as POE‐Δ, which is rooted in design and engineering and is aimed at providing systematic support for representing, structuring and exploring change problems. We generalize an existing theory of greenfield design as problem solving for application to change problems: from a theoretical perspective POE‐Δ is a subset of its parent framework, allowing the seamless integration of greenfield and brownfield design to tackle change problems. Its initial case study evaluation shows that POE‐Δ allows the systematic analysis of change problems, leading to clearer understanding and better informed decision making. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Un cadre d'analyse pour mesurer le progrès de sociétés Pendant les trois dernières décennies, un certain nombre de cadres ont été développés afin de promouvoir et mesurer le bien-être, la qualité de la vie, le développement humain et le développement durable. Quelques cadres se servent d'une approche conceptuelle tandis que d'autres emploient une approche consultative. Des initiatives différentes pour mesurer le progrès exigeront des cadres différents. Ce papier a pour objectif de présenter une proposition de cadre pour mesurer le progrès de sociétés et de le comparer avec d'autres cadres de progrès qui sont utilisés en ce moment à travers le monde. Le cadre n'aspire pas à être définitif, mais suggère plutôt un point de départ commun que les auteurs croient universel et assez flexible pour être appliqué dans un grand nombre de situations à travers le monde. L'intention est également que ce cadre puisse être utilisé pour identifier des lacunes dans les normes statistiques existantes et guider le travail afin de combler ces lacunes.

Measures of well-being have proliferated over the past decades. Very little guidance has been available as to which measures to use in what contexts. This paper provides a series of recommendations, based on the present state of knowledge and the existing measures available, of what measures might be preferred in which contexts. The recommendations came out of an interdisciplinary workshop on the measurement of well-being. The recommendations are shaped around the number of items that can be included in a survey, and also based on the differing potential contexts and purposes of data collection such as, for example, government surveys, or multi-use cohort studies, or studies specifically about psychological well-being. The recommendations are not intended to be definitive, but to stimulate discussion and refinement, and to provide guidance to those relatively new to the study of well-being.
