The article explores civil rights activism in Virginia during the 1960s— namely, the NAACP's response to direct-action protests in the state, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's voter registration efforts, and the grassroots organizing of the Virginia Students' Civil Rights Committee. It uses these case studies to shed new light on important questions being debated by civil rights scholars—including the role of the NAACP, the relationship between the local and the national, the origins of Black Power, and the impact of the war in Vietnam on the civil rights movement.

Illies mit seinem "1913"-Bestseller gemacht (2012), so zuletzt auch V. Sebestyen zu "1946" (2016), und S. Hall, der in Leeds amerikanische Geschichte lehrt, setzt das nun mit "1956" fort. Halls roter Faden sind die aufständischen Bewegungen, die die Geschichte des Jahres weltweit durchziehen. Sein fesselnder, blendend geschriebener Querschnitt führt von den Rassenunruhen in den USA über Freiheitsbewegungen im Ostblock (Polen, Ungarn) und antikolonialistische und -rassistische Bewegungen in Kuba und Nord- und Südafrika bis zum Konventionen sprengenden Rock'n'Roll. Der Autor verfolgt die Ereignisse chronologisch, von Schauplatz zu Schauplatz springend, verzichtet allerdings auf eine zusammenfassende Synthese und Deutung. Inhaltlich im Einzelnen wenig überraschend, ist das gleichwohl anregend in der Zusammenschau der Ereignisse und für zeitgeschichtlich Interessierte spannende Lektüre. AbstractThe occupation of the last remaining tropical forests has been an initiative of many developing nations that is debated by the global community due to impacts on soil erosion, biodiversity loss and contributions to global climate change. Arguments against development range from the irreversible nature of tropical deforestation to the synergistic losses associated with environmental degradation and continued poverty. The focus of this paper is to determine if evidence of market advancements and growth can be found in an Amazonian settlement, thus providing counter-evidence for the boom–bust pattern of development that has been predicted for much of the Amazon. Using panel survey data (for four survey waves between 1996 and 2009), we find trends that are consistent with the industrial life cycle, suggesting a pattern that is more consistent with growth, development and consolidation.
