A Sovereign Nation's Functional Mythic Discourses
Examines the discourse of Ka Lahuir Hawai'i, a group dedicated to the creation of Hawaiian sovereignty, focusing on the mythic perspective that energizes its members. Drawing on interviews with group members & analysis of the group's public statements, it is shown that different Hawaiian myths animate the group's private & public discourse. In its private interactions, the group draws on the myth of Lono, the god of peace & love, while in its public statements, the group employs the myth of Ku, the god of war. The myth of Lono is used to unite & organize members to take action on behalf of the group's goals, while the myth of Ku is wielded to engage in symbolic battle with the group's opposition. This ethnic strategy for group mobilization is taken to represent a unique cultural orientation that is accessible only through a functional mythic perspective. D. M. Smith
Handbook of critical intercultural communication
In: Handbooks in communication and media
"This handbook presents a foundational collection of core theoretical, methodological, and applied works that constitute and illustrate critical intercultural communication studies. With these core pieces in one book, scholars gain a defining assemblage of pieces that define critical intercultural communication from key intercultural communication and critical scholars. Moreover, these essays are bound together in a book structure that scaffolds up from foundation to application and allows for reflection and connection among sections and pieces. Even after ten years, this one-stop defining collection is more appealing than piecing together separate articles over time. No other comprehensive collection of essays defines, delineates, and constitutes critical intercultural communication studies"--
