The Western approach to labor disputes is contrasted to approaches followed in various non-Western countries. The Western approach is based on avoidance of strikes through official means of negotiation that legitimize & limit disputes, & are largely independent of government. Non-Western countries often display much greater limits on the autonomy of industry conflict resolution. At present, Western countries appear to be accepting lessened autonomy for this process as well. An approach based on administration would be superior to one based on adjudication. The freedom of non-Western unions from autonomy & their closeness to particular firms appear to offer them some distinct advantages. W. H. Stoddard.
