From Home country to Home country? The Emigration of Highly Qualified German Citizens of Turkish Descent to Turkey ; Aus der Heimat in die Heimat? Die Abwanderung hochqualifizierter türkeistämmiger deutscher Staatsangehöriger in die Türkei
Against the background of the global competition for talent, the migration of highly skilled people has recently received much attention. Since surveys discovered a high willingness to emigrate of highly qualified Germans of Turkish descent, there has been much discussion on this phenomenon especially in the German media. The policy brief inquires into the motives behind this emigration, examines prerequisites for the immigration and integration of the highly qualified German emigrants of Turkish descent in Turkey and draws a look at aspects of identification and instances of (ethnic) self-attribution. Finally, the question whether the phenomenon of second-generation Turkish immigrants migrating from Germany to Turkey ought to be labeled as "emigration" or "return migration" is discussed.
