When the Duke of Parma, Odoardo Farnese, summoned his noble subjects to join his army with a view to joining the French alliance against Spain in 1635, he was gratified by a turnout of astonishingly high proportions. Not nearly enough of them had personal experience of modern war, and so the prince appointed military nobles from much of northern Italy to fill the cadres, alongside the French officers whose contingents on loan from Louis XIII made up a third of the infantry. Unlike Spanish nobles, Odoardo's subjects were even willing to serve in the ranks, while waiting for their advancement. The two brief campaigns turned out to be a disaster for Odoardo and his subjects. War quickly receded from Parma's horizon, but the experience reveals that Italy's aristocrats had not yet consigned their weapons to display cases.

Résumé Cette recherche prend la mesure de l'impact démographique de la guerre de Trente Ans en Italie du Nord pour la première fois, axée sur le petit duché de Parme et de Plaisance, allié de la France. Plutôt que de déterminer les dimensions de la population globale avant et après la guerre, cette étude calcule les pertes réelles parmi les soldats et les civils. Les résultats, qui restent approximatifs, révèlent que les pertes parmi les civils dépassaient de très loin celles des militaires, suite à la faim et des maladies diverses. La différence principale par rapport à l'Allemagne fut que cette mortalité d'environ 4% de la population totale était infligée dans quelques mois seulement d'occupation par l'armée espagnole.

Urban elites across early modern Europe practised a variety of playful activities that extolled martial virtues. In Siena under the Medici grand dukes, nobles played at war for an urban audience, and celebrated those among them who had experienced the real thing. Tuscan cities staged mock-combat games of mazzoscudo, organized jousts and assembled cavalcades of mounted honour-guards whose regalia evoked chivalric themes. These festivities contrasted ever more strikingly with a Counter-Reformation of decency, while the aristocracy demilitarized culturally, as well as professionally. If warlike cultures practised more warlike sports, Italian states and society as a whole demilitarized in the course of the late seventeenth century, and these pageants waned in consequence.
