The level of a bank's capitalization can effectively transmit information about its riskiness and therefore support market discipline, but asymmetry information may induce exaggerated or distortionary behavior: banks may vie with one another to signal confidence in their prospects by keeping capitalization low, and banks' creditors often cannot distinguish among them - tendencies that can be seen across banks and across time. Prudential policy is warranted to help offset these tendencies

Behaviour in the first three years of auctions for Pakistani
treasury bills is studied. Bidding strategies rapidly converged to a
consistent pattern after the auctions started in 1991. Factors that
influenced the expected profitability of auction participation are
identified. Auction participation was on average low and did not differ
between types of bidders. Prices bids are found to reflect both 'buy and
sell' and 'buy and hold' strategies, and were affected by risk
considerations and bidder-specific variables. The Pakistani experience
suggests the robustness of auctions as a market-based allocation
mechanism, and their value in public debt management.
Änderungen der Notenbankzinsen sind in Deutschland wie in allen anderen westlichen Industrieländern das zentrale Instrument der Geldpolitik. Sie stellen den ersten Schritt im monetären Transmissionsprozeß dar. Die wichtigsten Notenbankzinsen sind in Deutschland der Pensionssatz, der Lombard-und der Diskontsatz. In dieser Arbeit werden die unmittelbaren Marktreaktionen auf Änderungen der Leitzinsen untersucht. Dabei interessiert vor allem, welche Signalwirkungen von Notenbankzinsänderungen auf die Marktzinssätze aller Pristigkeiten und auf andere finanzielle Preise ausgehen. Insbesondere werden die Reaktionen der Geldmarktzinsen, der Rendite öffentlicher Wertpapiere, der impliziten Terminsätze, der Wechselkurse, der ausländischen Zinssätze und schließlich der Aktienkurse im unmittelbaren Umfeld von Änderungen der Leitzinssätze beobachtet .
