Die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Darstellung des US-amerikanischen Historikers rekonstruiert die Reise des Sklavenschiffs "Diligent" von 1731 bis 1733 vom französischen Vannes nach Guinea, von dort nach Martinique und zurück in die Bretagne. Kern des Buches - und ein Glücksfall für die Geschichtsschreibung - stellt das private Logbuch des Ersten Leutnants des Schiffs dar. Dessen schrecklich sachliche Darstellung der Reise verdeutlicht die Brutalität des Geschäfts besser als jeder Sekundärtext.
