International audience ; This article is a more expansive look at the history of entrepreneurship in Ethiopian than previous literature, which focused primarily on industrial priorities of the State. Framed within P. Evans' (1995) typology of State roles in industrial transformation, it addresses the relative absence of literature on economic alliances between the Ethiopian State and local entrepreneurs. Drawing on original source material enables description of a specific entrepreneurial group, that of foreign residents, and shows how they have been instrumental in the dynamics of local entrepreneurship, both commercial and industrial. These foreign residents acted under the economic protection of the State as a seed bed for emerging technology and industrial orientations with three successive regimes.

(DÜI-Ott)
