Using the World Bank's Enterprise Survey for the Philippines, our analysis found that, on average, firms that deployed partial or full automation in their operations were more likely to hire more workers than fewer relative to their counterpart firms. These results suggest a net positive employment impact of automation, at least in the short run. The findings differ, however, by industries−net job creation is significant only among manufacturing firms. In contrast, we found that firms in the service industry have a higher likelihood of net job losses as they adopt partial or full automation. Indeed, there is an expectation that firms' decision to automate will cause labor market disruptions, which deserve immediate policy interventions. Human capital development, such as education and training, would be a critical policy lever to prevent the adverse effect of job displacement on the economic, social, and psychological well-being of individuals. The government should prepare workers to acquire the right set of skills and competencies, making them more flexible and able to fulfill new tasks amid further adoption of automation. Otherwise, the anxiety over the future loss of work will become a reality.

While "knowledge learning" about the outgroup has been regarded as one of the key mechanisms for the contact–prejudice relation since the contact hypothesis' first inception (Pettigrew & Tropp, 2008), "learning," more broadly, has rarely been used as an explanatory framework to investigate the consequences of intergroup contact. In this article, we lay the foundation of a learning model of anxiety and stress in ingroup–outgroup interactions. We distinguish between episodic and chronic anxiety responses to the outgroup and recommend investigations on the complexities of their dynamic interplay, as individuals accumulate and dynamically integrate their experiences with the outgroup over time. Through a review of established and emerging psychophysiological and behavioral research of anxiety during ingroup–outgroup interactions, we identify evidence consistent with this dynamic outlook of intergroup contact effects. In this context, we also advance novel and untested predictions for future investigations onto the temporal integration of contact effects during an individual's lifespan.

The importance of examining positive aspects of youth development has been emphasized across disciplines involved in the care of youth with substance abuse problems. However, little is known about the strengths of adolescents with substance abuse problems, especially youth entering residential treatment. Utilizing the Strengths Assessment Inventory, a measure assessing psychological and social strengths, we examined patterns of strengths across groups of age- and gender-matched youth who reported no substance use, frequent substance use, and those entering treatment for severe substance use. Each group consisted of 43 participants ranging in age from 14 to 18 years. Results indicated that, on average, individuals entering treatment scored lower on personal strengths. However, through the use of more sophisticated statistical approaches, it was found that certain strengths were predictive of individuals belonging to the treatment group. Results are discussed in terms of their relevance to the treatment of adolescent substance abuse problems.
