SummaryJohn Sibthorp (1758–96) and Ferdinand Bauer (1760–1826) explored the eastern Mediterranean between 1786 and 1787, collecting specimens and seeds, and making field sketches. In Oxford, Bauer produced watercolours from his sketches as Sibthorp reorganised the Physic Garden to make it appropriate for teaching Linnaean botany. This paper shows how Sibthorp, a dedicated teacher, incorporated Bauer's illustrations and living plants collected during their travels, into his annual lecture course.
