Bashar al-Assad's Lebanon Gamble
In: Middle East quarterly, Band 12, Heft 3, S. 33-44
ISSN: 1073-9467
Examines the implications of Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon for the Bashar al-Assad regime. The Syrian occupation of Lebanon is described, along with the notion of Syrian prestige & the regime's belief in its moral leadership in the region & the character of its control of Lebanon. Following the 2000 Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, Lebanese criticism of the Syrian presence began to coalesce, resulting in a crackdown by Syrian client Lebanese President Emile Lahoud. Problems arose for Syria when Bashar attempted to change the Lebanese constitution to extend Lahoud's presidency another three years. This pressure was a direct affront to the US, which had grown frustrated with the Bashar regime despite the latter's limited assistance in the war on terror, & energized opposition to Syria's role in Lebanese politics. The assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri was the final blow for Syria, leading to anti-Syrian demonstrations & international pressure for withdrawal. What Hariri's assassination means for Lebanon & the survival of the Bashar regime is considered in closing. J. Zendejas

Report on the pressures on Syria from both Israel and the Lebanese front. A new confrontation between pro- and anti-Syrian forces seems only a matter of time. Apart from the manoeuvrings for advantage by Lebanese factions Syria and Israel are at loggerheads. Israel will not allow major Syrian advances in Lebanon without exacting a higher price in South Lebanon than Syria seems ready to pay. (DÜI-Asd)
