The critique of the 'Moral Economy' of peasant societies continues a controversy within the Economic Anthropology of the fifties and sixties between 'Substantivists' and 'Formalists' , although on a slightly different level: the present contradiction is centred on the effectiveness of social norms versus the strength of individual decision-making in peasant societies. This controversy is represented by two authors: James C. Scott, the 'Moral Economist' and Samuel L. Popkin, the Political Economist. Both approaches focus on the relationship between economic and social institutions and the impact of change in peasant societies. Popkin, however, emphasizes the difficulties faced by village communities in maintaining and (re-)enforcing these institutions during times of rapid social and economic change. He challenges the effectiveness of norms of equilibrium which are thought to be based on a 'Subsistence Ethic' and defined by requirements of reproduction within the whole village community. He states that modern capitalist market forces, as they have been experienced by peasant societies for quite some decades now, are not always, and not by all members of the community, seen as threatening their social and economic well-being and security, in other words their ' subsistence' . Peasants are, in fact, frequently responding to modem market forces in perfectly modern, 'rational' ways, calculating and balancing risks and benefits. Furthermore, threats on subsistence margins, that is, the danger of being forced below a 'subsistence floor' , do not neccessarily lead to peasant rebellion because such forms of collective action are difficult to organise where personal interests, gain or loss are at stake. Popkin suggests that in rapidly changing rural societies, much more attention should be given to mechanisms of individual decision-making.

Abstract der Referenzpublikation:

Abstract of the referenced publication:
Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, this article examines (1) the prevalence of vegetarians in Germany, (2) their social profile, and (3) dynamic features and short-term effects on subjective health of a vegetarian diet. As in many other Western countries, the prevalence of vegetarians and vegans in Germany is on an upward trend. In the period 2016-2020, about 7 percent of the Germans declared themselves as vegetarians (including vegans). The probability of being a vegetarian is higher among women, younger people, the better educated, those living in single households, residents of urban areas, and those who support the green political party. We observe considerable temporal stability of individual dietary patterns – mainly due to a dominant group of continuous non-vegetarians (almost 90 percent). We also test a special variant of the health-benefit hypothesis of a vegetarian diet. We find no support of this hypothesis when looking at short-term effects on individuals' overall assessment of their personal health.

This paper examines passible causes for the acceleration of tropical deforestation and the role of a popular instrument to reverse this trend, debt-for-nature swamps (DNS). This instrument builds on the contention that the debt crisis of developing countries has created the need to exploit natural resources, such as tropical forest areas. Thus, DNS could potentially protect forests directly (through conservation projects) and indirectly (by reducing debt-induced pressure on the forests). First, an instrumental critique of DNS is given, followed by an empirical examination of the debt-deforestation link that stands behind the instrument of DNS. Neither this nor other plausible causes of the acceleration of deforestation can be identified as significant in a cross-country study. The paper concludes that appropriate policy instruments must be based on case-specific research.
