While nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) can potentially strengthen valuable citizen political engagement, NGOs that are increasingly oriented towards donor and government contracts may instead contribute to depoliticizing development. Amidst competing pressures, NGO experiences and agency in managing multiple roles require examination. We present a qualitative case study of an NGO implementing a government‐designed intervention to strengthen Village Health, Sanitation, and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs) in rural north India. Despite a challenging context of community scepticism and poor government services, the NGO did successfully form VHSNCs by harnessing its respected interlocutor status, preexisting relationships, and ability to "sell" the VHSNC as a mechanism for improving local well‐being. While the VHSNC enabled community members to voice concerns to government officials, improvements often failed to meet community expectations. NGO staff endured community frustration on one hand and rebuffs from lower‐level officials on the other, while feeling undersupported by the government contract. Consequently, although contracted to strengthen a community institution, the NGO increasingly worked alongside VHSNC members to try to strengthen the public sector. Contrary to assumptions that NGOs become "tamed" through taking government contracts, being contracted to deliver inputs for community participation was intertwined with microlevel political action, though this came at a cost to the NGO.

Purpose Research-based theater uses drama to communicate research findings to audiences beyond those that typically read peer-reviewed journals. We applied research-based theater to translate qualitative research findings on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on different segments of U.S. society. Approach Theater artists and public health researchers collaborated to create a collection of eight monologues from systematically sourced, peer-reviewed publications. Following three virtual performances in Spring, 2021, audience members were invited to complete a survey. Setting/Participants Audience survey respondents (n = 120) were mostly U.S.-based and were diverse in terms of age, race/ethnicity, gender, profession, and experience attending theater. Method We summarized closed-ended responses and explored patterns by demographic characteristics. We synthesized themes of open-ended responses with inductive coding. Results Audience members somewhat/strongly agreed that COVID Monologues increased their knowledge (79.4%), represented the reality of the U.S. COVID-19 epidemic (95.7%), and offered new perspectives on what people had been experiencing (87.5%). Most also agreed research-based theater is an effective means of understanding health research (93.5%) and can promote community resilience in times of public health crisis (83.2%). Mann-Whitney U tests suggested less positive reactions from demographics that were not well-represented in monologue characters (cisgender men, Hispanics). Qualitative comments suggested audience members valued monologues that offered self-reflection and validation of their own COVID-19 experiences through relatable characters as well as those that offered insight into the experiences of people different from themselves. Conclusion This work adds to evidence that research-based theater can help build knowledge and emotional insight around a public health issue. As these elements are foundational to pro-social, preventative health behaviors, research-based theater may have a useful role in promoting collective response to public health crises like COVID-19. Our method of systematically-sourcing research for theater-based dissemination could be extended to target more specific audiences with actionable behaviors.

Reducing the burden of household air pollution requires that cleaner fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) be used nearly exclusively. However, exclusive adoption has been challenging in low- and middle-income countries. Previous studies have found that economic, social, and cultural barriers often impede adoption. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 22 participants in a research trial where LPG was provided for free in Puno, Peru. We aimed to determine whether social and cultural barriers to LPG use persisted when monetary costs to the household were removed, and what factors influenced exclusive adoption of LPG in a cost-free context. Facilitators of LPG use included: support from study staff, family support, time savings, previous experience with LPG, stove design, ability to use existing pots, smoke reductions, desire for cleanliness, removal of traditional stoves, and perceptions of luck. Barriers to LPG use included: fears of LPG, problems with LPG brands, delays in obtaining LPG refills, social pressure, perceived incompatibility of traditional dishes, perceived inability to use clay pots, separate kitchens for LPG and traditional stoves, designated pots for use on the traditional stove, and lack of heat. However, these barriers did not prevent participants from using LPG nearly exclusively. Results suggest that social and cultural barriers to exclusive LPG use can be overcome when LPG stoves and fuel are provided for free and supplemented with behavioral support. Governments should evaluate the economic feasibility and sustainability of LPG subsidization, considering the potential benefits of exclusive LPG use.
