This article examines the evolution of the social conflicts around collective enterprises in Andalusia. The analysis centres on the role that ideological and more broadly political factors may have played in these conflicts. Were worker enterprises considered an instrument for the emancipation of workers or, rather, a sort of antidote to the revolution? The period examined extends from the emergence of Fourierism in Andalusia through to the end of the Civil War. A few parallels are drawn with the situation of collective enterprises in more recent times.

Land Reform Cooperatives and Food Security in the Ecuadorian Sierra
In a cooperative-based land reform program, sociological analysis has to take into account the strategies of both public authorities and peasant "beneficiaries". The degree of compatibility between these strategies explains : why cooperatives created at the initiative of public authorities are, or are not, accepted by peasants ; why they do, or do not, operate correctly in economic and social terms ; why they do, or do not, contribute to improving national security in foodstuffs ; and especially why they do, or do not, significantly improve the situation of small producers, in particular their food supplies. In this respect, the linkage that cooperatives set up between small producers' domestic economy and the capitalistic economic system is of overriding importance.

The major economic and social changes that have taken place in Latin America over the past several decades have generated educational needs which the traditional systems have failed to meet. The work of a number of teams in the field has resulted in a new method of participatory action-research, designed to help grass-root groups, through a collective initiation into research techniques, to overcome their own problems. The International Co-operative University, an offshoot of the Co-operative College in Paris, was established for the education of intellectuals involved in the grass-roots movement and already familiar with participatory development activities
