As of spring 1943, only several thousand Jews still lived in the German Reich, most of them in "mixed marriages" or in hiding; in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, they were mostly in Theresienstadt, which served as a transition point for deportation to Auschwitz as well as a "model" ghetto to deceive the international public.
