This paper analyses the social quest for the future and the function of its associated futurizing practices. Specifically, it discusses the role of the social sciences and the humanities for understanding these practices under conditions of intense precarity and uncertainty. This is weighed against the need to secure the future as an existential good along with associated political and economic attempts to colonize the future as a means and resource of further securing positions that are often already unhelpfully entrenched. In light of the complex interplay between these factors, this paper ultimately aims to conceptualize a role for the social sciences and the humanities as advocates for a more inclusive, open-ended form of futurizing. Der Begriff "Industrie 4.0" bezeichnet den Prozess der Digitalisierung und Informatisierung der Wirtschaft und Produktion und ist ein in Deutschland fest etabliertes Konzept und Leitbild. Auch wenn dieses Leitbild zunächst neue Formen des Wirtschaftens und der Produktion lediglich als Vision konzipiert, so deutet alles darauf hin, dass diese Transformation einen Wandel hervorrufen wird, der in erster Linie kein rein technologischer, sondern ein gesellschaftlicher, bzw. ein sozio-technologischer Wandel ist. Bezüglich dieser Prognose herrscht Einigkeit und wir halten es daher für unabdingbar, das Verständnis und die Gestaltung der technischen Prozesse (smartification, Vernetzung, Digitalisierung) um ein Verständnis und eine Bewertung der möglichen Auswirkungen auf Gesellschaften zu ergänzen. Denn ebenso wie wir technische Umwelten unter der Maßgabe von mehr Effizienz, Produktivität und Innovation gestalten, benötigen wir neben der Diskussion und Einführung entsprechender Organisationen und Prozesse auch eine Debatte und Verständigung über politische und soziale Visionen und diesen zu Grunde liegende Prämissen. Diese sind vielfältig und sollten in ihrer Diversität auch zu Wort kommen. Soziale Visionen können latenten Widerständen und Unbehagen gegenüber Neuem Ausdruck geben, sie können aber auch einen Kulturwandel einleiten, der neue Praktiken des Umgangs mit technischen Umwelten hervorbringt, der technische Transformation neu inszeniert und rahmt. Insofern gibt der hier vorliegende Band Impulse, den Weg der Umsetzung von Industrie 4.0 zukunftsweisend zu gestalten, indem technologisch-wirtschaftliche Interessen mit sozial-kulturellen Vorstellungen in Resonanz gebracht werden und somit ein im Wesentlichen technisch fokussiertes, modernistisches Innovationsverständnis für gesellschaftliche Fragen und soziale Innovationen geöffnet ...

Clashes between visions of the future politicize the future of urgent societal transformations. In the political economy, visions and their promises become resources and their implementation turns into capacities that increase value. Our paper argues that visions as political-economic means influence the transformation processes responding to grand challenges, guide them in certain directions, promote or even hinder them. To shed light on this correlation, we adopt the vision assessment approach of technology assessment (TA), and substantiate and suggest modifications of its analytical perspective to make it suitable for analysing interactions between multiple visions as formative elements in societal transformations on the one hand and as political-economic resources and capacities on the other. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between visions, political economies and transformation can only be examined by looking at power constellations that change through clashes and interactions of multiple and competing visionary practices.

Reports from integrative researchers who have followed calls for sociotechnical integration emphasize that the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration to inflect the social shaping of technoscience is often constrained by their liminal position. Integrative researchers tend to be positioned as either adversarial outsiders or co-opted insiders. In an attempt to navigate these dynamics, we show that attending to affective disturbances can open up possibilities for productive engagements across disciplinary divides. Drawing on the work of Helen Verran, we analyze "disconcertment" in three sociotechnical integration research studies. We develop a heuristic that weaves together disconcertment, affective labor, and responsivity to analyze the role of the body in interdisciplinary collaborations. We draw out how bodies do affective labor when generating responsivity between collaborators in moments of disconcertment. Responsive bodies can function as sensors, sources, and processors of disconcerting experiences of difference. We further show how attending to disconcertment can stimulate methodological choices to recognize, amplify, or minimize the difference between collaborators. Although these choices are context-dependent, each one examined generates responsivity that supports collaborators to readjust the technical in terms of the social. This analysis contributes to science and technology studies scholarship on the role of affect in successes and failures of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Problemstellung: Technikvisionen, Zukunftsszenarien, Entwicklungsleitbilder repräsentieren Imaginationen zukünftiger Zustände, die in Technikentwicklungs- und Innovationsprozessen funktionale Rollen spielen – z.B. als Mittel der Aufmerksamkeitserzeugung, Kommunikation, Koordination oder der strategischen Beeinflussung. Seit einigen Jahren lässt sich eine wachsende Aufmerksamkeit für solche Zukunftsbilder in Politik, Wirtschaft, Forschung und Zivilgesellschaft feststellen. Das lässt die Technikfolgenabschätzung (TA) als Beobachter der Prozesse und als Berater über die Folgen von Technik und Innovation nicht unberührt. TA sieht sich zunehmender Nachfrage gegenüber, in der Gegenwart zirkulierende Zukunftsvorstellungen zu beurteilen und durch Szenarien oder Foresight mitzugestalten. Stärker denn je stellt sich deshalb für die TA die Frage, welche Aussagen sie auf Grundlage dieser Zukunftsvorstellungen treffen kann und wie sie ihr erworbenes Wissen in ihren Beratungspraktiken umsetzen kann. Für die TA relevant sind diese Vorstellungen nicht als Prognosen, sondern in ihrer Bedeutung und Wirkung in der Gegenwart, die es zu verstehen und zu beurteilen gilt. Inhalt: Dieses Diskussionspapier skizziert, wie die TA die gegenwärtigen Bedeutungen und Wirkungen von Zukunftsvorstellungen in Technikentwicklungs- und Innovationsprozessen begreifen und analysieren kann. Alle Formen technologiebezogener Zukunftsvorstellungen werden im Papier unter dem Arbeitsbegriff "soziotechnische Zukünfte" zusammengefasst. Als soziotechnische Zukünfte werden sie bezeichnet, da technische Entwicklungen in ihnen immer in Beziehung zu sozialen Veränderungen gesetzt werden.
