The roles of workers' councils and trade unions in Polish private and state-owned enterprises are reviewed. State-owned enterprises and producer cooperatives are hypothesized to have greater industrial democracy than privatized or new private sector firms, and industrial democracy is hypothesized to be associated positively with enterprise performance. General support was found for both of these hypotheses with a national sample (n=361) of Polish enterprises. There was considerable variance in Polish trade union density by firm type and, when present, trade unions were often found to have difficulty in securing collective agreements at the enterprise level. This study found Polish workers' councils to be positively associated with short- and long-term profitability and market share projections. These findings suggest that the current Polish labour code, which phases out workers' councils in the private sector, should be re-examined in order to expand industrial democracy at the enterprise level. Western European industrial relations paradigms which permit codetermination and/or consultation should be considered for adoption in Poland as a means to improve industrial democracy and organizational performance. AbstractA study of the impact of hospital closure on employees is timely in light of reports that health care systems in both Canada and the United States are being examined for major restructuring. The literature on health facility closures to date has largely focussed on the determinants of closure, ways to prevent closure, and the impact of closure on patient care. This study builds on the findings of the few studies that have examined the impact of health facility closure on the employees. Coping methods were found to be quite stable over time, reflecting a coping style. Differences in work‐related outcomes were found between the closure site (Shaughnessy) and a control site (UBC). Higher levels of work‐related stress and lower levels of job security were experienced during the closure and transition period by Shaughnessy employees. Job satisfaction was found to be independent of job security and work‐related stress. Workers from the closure site experienced decreased levels of job satisfaction in their new jobs. Those using problem‐focussed coping methods were found to cope more effectively than those using emotion‐focussed methods.

AbstractThe study of union certification elections is well advanced in the academic literature. There is, however, little research on determinants of union certification when more than one union is on the ballot. The work on multiunion elections that does exist is primarily descriptive and conducted at the macro level. This paper presents a micro‐level study of a multiunion election. Three sets of variables derived from expectancy theory, the investments model, and the theory of reasoned action, were posited to influence employee choice in a multiunion election. Data were collected via a mail survey of 270 employees who recently participated in a multiunion election. The data were analyzed using multiple analysis of variance and discriminant analysis. The results provide strong evidence that the employee vote in a multiunion election is correlated with (a) an evaluation of the efficacy of a raiding union, (b) employee behavioural investments, and (c) the attitudes of others in the immediate work group. Implications for labour practitioners centre on increasing employee involvement, identifying the union with important others, and delivering desired results.
