Abstract. The globalization project has led to the reformulation of the nation-state, particularly inregard to its level of autonomy and sovereignity in the realms of social, political and economic regulation. With its time-space compression and progressive global economic integration, globalisation has also brought with it an augmentation of migratory movements; a progression that has challenged previous notions of identity, belonging and community. It is argued that such developments render obsolete, conceptions of the nation-state as a static, non-leaking container, culminating in the rise of a new phenomenon —transnationalism— which not only challenges the nation-state project but also the present and futurerelevance of certain social sciences.

; This article analyzes the transformation of the colombian national state under the government of Álvaro Uribe, focusing on Plan Colombia and the state projects that flow from it, in order to reflect on the militarization of State and the social repression associated with both. It is argued that government policies under the Plan are aimed at consolidating a regime of market accumulation and speculation that, while linked to a transnational hegemonic thrust emanating from the United States, is also closely linked to local developments and Colombia's internal conflict. These interactions provide an exemplary illustration of the reconfiguration at multiple levels of the world political economy today.

News outlets, sports coverage, and even Hollywood movies have highlighted the growing body of research documenting the long-term negative consequences of traumatic injury in athletics, particularly, (sports-related) concussions. Despite so much media coverage, little is known about how much attention members of the American public pay to sports concussion news. Disparities in attention to concussion news among sociodemographic groups may contribute to further inequalities in rates of concussions that stem from participation in collision sports. In this study, using a 2017 nationally representative survey of US residents (n = 964), we examine the social, political, and demographic correlates of individuals' attention to news about concussions in sports. Regression results indicate that older, more educated, Democratic-leaning respondents reported that they pay more attention to news about concussions. Additionally, respondents with a greater past competitive athletic participation and those who regularly watch baseball and football reported higher levels of attention to concussion news. These findings are consistent with previous research showing higher levels of news consumption and trust in science among the highly educated and Democrats. The increased levels among football viewers may be in response to the inclusion of concussion news in game coverage.

Throughout the history of the United States, the South has had higher levels of military service than other regions of the country. Scholars regularly refer to this phenomenon as a "Southern military tradition." The reasons behind this overrepresentation are not completely understood. Do Southern sociodemographic characteristics make it a preferred recruiting area or is there something distinctive about the cultural legacy of Southern history that encourages and supports military service? Using a unique data set that includes county-level active duty army enlistments and sociodemographic information, we show that Southern counties have significantly higher enlistment rates than counties in the Northeast and Midwest. These differences disappear when sociodemographic factors, such as fewer college graduates and a prominent presence of Evangelical Christians, are taken into account. These findings suggest that population characteristics may be a stronger driver of current regional disparities in military service than an inherited Southern military tradition.
