Theodor W. Adorno, E. Frenkel-Brunswik, D. J. Levinson, & R. N. Sanford (The Authoritarian Personality, New York: Harper, 1950) propose that authoritarianism is positively related to patriotism. Data from 106 residents of Bloemfontein, South Africa, a predominantly Afrikaans-speaking city, including responses to scales of patriotism, ethnocentrism, conformity, civil defense attitudes, self-esteem, economic conservatism, authoritarianism attitudes, & authoritarian personality, are used to test this thesis. Relatively little of the variance in patriotism was explained by the other variables; authoritarian attitudes, however, were the best predictor of patriotism, while authoritarian personality had little association with it. 1 Table, 3 Appendixes.
