AbstractThe current scholarly analysis of pop continues to operate within the framework of a power theory that ascribes the subject of investigation a political function. This text seeks an alternative explanation of the phenomenon by assigning pop its own (exclusive) social function. Pop is understood as a self‐substitutive unit, which qualifies it for the status of a function system. The basic structures typical for systems can be demonstrated: function, medium, code, various programmes, the specific communicative operation as well as its reflexive function, and so forth. The present text examines four additional structural elements which Luhmann designates as characteristic of function systems—secondary code, side code, contingency formula and zero methodology—to further refine the concept. Findings: Pop has many features that are characteristic of function systems. It is anything but a sphere of disorder, but has a definite infrastructure.

The present investigation examines the hypothesis that contemporary pop music has caught 'retromania': infected by its own past, it will bring about its own downfall. It identifies this observation as retrology: a specific school of thought within pop history. The article first looks at the major premises on which retrology is founded. It then asks why these assumptions have been so widely accepted. Next, it offers a sociological approach to look at pop music's increasing interest in the past without recourse to moralistic divisions. Pop is seen as a social system, and not as an opaque accumulation of individual activities. Reproducing itself by a specific form of communication—the concatenation of songs—its main goal is simply to continue; it therefore desires neither 'advancement' nor 'retro-gression'. The conclusion is that retro does not indicate a crisis; rather the opposite—it allows pop to carry on.

Ein Virus dominiert weltweit die Kommunikationsströme. »Corona« ist von gesamtgesellschaftlicher Relevanz, das Kennzeichen jeder Krise. Nicht nur die Körper sind infiziert, auch die Gesellschaft ist es. Ein Zwang zum Urteilen und Handeln unter Zeitnot, eine unbestimmte Verpflichtung zur Aktion setzt Politik, Wirtschaft, Massenmedien und nicht zuletzt die Wissenschaft unter Druck. Man könnte von einer sozialen Immunantwort der Gesellschaft sprechen, einem Krisenmanagement, das unterschiedliche kommunikative Anschlüsse organisiert; Anschlüsse, die zum Virus ein Verhältnis suchen. Da es in der modernen Gesellschaft keine Zentralinstanz mehr gibt, die grundlegende Direktiven festlegt, bildet jeder der gesellschaftlichen Teilbereiche andere Antikörper aus. »Corona« ist für die Politik etwas anderes als für die Wirtschaft, für die Religion etwas anderes als für die Wissenschaft. Allerdings ist die Corona-Krise nicht nur ein Ausnahmezustand, der zwei unterschiedliche Strukturen miteinander konfrontiert: die gewohnten, die wir alltäglich als ›normal‹ empfinden, und jene des Lockdowns und der Kontaktbeschränkungen, die diese unterbrechen. Die Corona-Krise ist auch ein Anlass, jenseits globaler Lieferketten über die eigene Identität nachzudenken. Wir können sie als Übung begreifen, denn ähnliche und vielleicht tödlichere Infektionskrankheiten können jederzeit neu auftreten. Sie finden in der Struktur der Weltgesellschaft beste Bedingungen vor. Hat Corona sie womöglich für immer verändert? Vorliegender Sammelband ist der Versuch, dem öffentlichen Interesse an wissenschaftlichen Resultaten ohne Verlust an Komplexität und Sinngenauigkeit gerecht zu werden. Er bringt das Nachdenken über die Pandemie in Form eines interdisziplinären Projekts auf die Höhe der gesellschaftlichen Praxis: Soziologie, Philosophie, Psychologie, Theologie, Rechtswissenschaft, Medizin und andere wissenschaftliche Programme leuchten die unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des »Gegenstands« aus, um der übergreifenden Fragestellung gerecht zu werden, die das Virus für unsere Gesellschaft darstellt. This interview with network theorist Emily Erikson took place in March 2017 when she visited Habib University in Karachi, Pakistan, for a lecture on the English East India Company. She talks about the advantages of network theory, the challenges of Twitter research and the reasons for the success of the English East India Company, which—according to Erikson—cannot be successfully explained by using a European cultures versus South Asian cultures framework. It also touches upon the critique of corporations in general and the possible links between globalisation and the rise of populism in the United States. Emily Erikson teaches sociology at Yale University and works on social networks and the development of institutions of capitalism and democracy. Her award-winning book Between Monopoly and Free Trade: The English East India Company (Princeton University Press, 2014) shows how an informal social network linking autonomous employees fostered the company's long-term success, shedding light on the processes underpinning the emergence of early multinational firms and the structure of early modern global trade. Her forthcoming book New Knowledge: The Rise of Economics and Development of the Public Sphere identifies the causes stimulating the development of pre-classical economic thought in the seventeenth century. Erikson serves on the council for economic sociology of the American Sociological Association and on the executive council of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics. In addition, she serves on the editorial boards of Social Science History, Relational Sociology Series (Palgrave MacMillan), and is a founding member of the advisory board for the Journal of Historical Network Research.
