The relationship between anthropology as the study of human beings and ethics as the study of what humans ought to do is close and multifaceted. The authors address the following questions: Are moral norms grounded in human nature or are they independent of it? Does ethics take into account human weaknesses or is morality absolute? If people change, do the requirements of morality change as well?

AbstractThe paper presents an ethical analysis and constructive critique of the current practice of AI ethics. It identifies conceptual substantive and procedural challenges and it outlines strategies to address them. The strategies include countering the hype and understanding AI as ubiquitous infrastructure including neglected issues of ethics and justice such as structural background injustices into the scope of AI ethics and making the procedures and fora of AI ethics more inclusive and better informed with regard to philosophical ethics. These measures integrate the perspective of AI justice into AI ethics, strengthening its capacity to provide comprehensive normative orientation and guidance for the development and use of AI that actually improves human lives and living together.

This inaugural volume in the 'Munich Lectures in Ethics' series presents lectures by noted philosopher Philip Kitcher. In these lectures Kitcher develops further the pragmatist approach to moral philosophy, begun in his book 'The Ethical Project'. He uses three historical examples of moral progress - the abolition of chattel slavery, the expansion of opportunities for women, and the increasing acceptance of same-sex love - to propose methods for moral inquiry. In his recommended methodology, Kitcher sees moral progress, for individuals and for societies, through collective discussions that become more inclusive, better informed, and involve participants more inclined to engage with the perspectives of others and aim at actions tolerable by all.

Main description: "Individualität" und "Selbstbestimmung" sind zwei grundlegende Begriffe der Philosophie, auf die eine angemessene Selbstbeschreibung des Menschen nicht verzichten kann. Menschen unterscheiden sich nicht nur so wie andere Dinge voneinander, sondern sie wollen ihre Individualität auch ausprägen, indem sie nach ihren eigenen Vorstellungen zu leben versuchen. Da diese individuelle Selbstbestimmung ihre Grenze an der Selbstbestimmung von und der Fremdbestimmung durch andere findet, kommt den beiden grundlegenden Begriffen eine gesellschaftlich-politische Bedeutung zu. Sie spielen jedoch nicht nur in der praktischen Philosophie eine wichtige Rolle, sondern sind auch für die Klärung erkenntnistheoretischer und metaphysischer Fragen von Bedeutung. So lässt sich beispielsweise im Anschluss an Kant die Auffassung vertreten, dass jede Erkenntnis eines anderen Dinges eine Selbsterkenntnis einschließt, durch die der Mensch sein Dasein theoretisch selbst bestimmt. Und so wie wir uns selbst als Individuen begreifen, lässt sich möglicherweise auch die Welt als ganze nur als etwas Individuelles begreifen. Der Sammelband vereint Beiträge prominenter Autoren, die in historischer oder systematischer Hinsicht Aspekte der Individualität und der Selbstbestimmung und ihres Zusammenhangs untersuchen.
