Before and now: The labour situation of clients in a therapeutic community
In: Portuguese journal of social science, Band 18, Heft 2, S. 213-227
ISSN: 1758-9509
Abstract This article aims to identify changes in the work situation among problematic drug users (PDU) clients of an international therapeutic community located in Portugal, after the completion of treatment. In this article, we analyse these changes on the assumption that
entry to the labour market is essential for effective social reintegration. To achieve our aim, we carried out a pilot study with an analysis of the administrative records of a therapeutic community and then held telephone interviews with 63 former clients. Different work-related factors were
compared, with special attention being paid to the changes registered. We concluded that, after treatment, although there was greater instability, educational qualifications and the number of PDU employees with an occupation increased. There was a decrease in factory workers and an increase
in administrative functions. First jobs were obtained via a more formal channel, while the most recent ones were obtained on own initiative. This leads to the conclusion that after an initial period of greater difficulties the PDU participants in this study manage to gain higher autonomy and
better integration into the labour market.

The Portuguese National Health Service and the patient health information workgroup

Workgroup) was established under the CAIC - Comissão de Acompanhamento da Informatização Clínica (Monitoring Committee of the Clinical Information Technology) of the SPMS - Serviços Partilhados do Ministério da Saúde (Shared Services for Health Ministry) in order to meet the challenges of new models of management and governance centered on citizens. This workgroup is grounded on the national information campaign named as "Health Information. More Transparency, Better Decision", a project of the Associação Fazedores da Mudança (The Change Makers Association) with financial support of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation). Objectives: To promote discussion topics and present concrete proposals, centered on patients, primarily related with: access to certified, reliable and useful health information; communication strategies; services to be made available on the Patient's Portal/website. Methodology: A multidisciplinary and inter-institutional group has been constituted with physicians, nurses, sociologists, social workers, health librarians, human resource managers, lawyers and IT experts. The mission is to design and implement an action plan until December 2016. To the design of the action plan, five main axes were identified: To Know, To Listen, To Improve, To Inform and To Evaluate. Based on a worksheet created for this purpose, the multidisciplinary group identified some actions/tasks to be undertaken. As a result of all the contributions made, a possible and feasible Action Plan was created, supported by some validation criteria: to be aggregator of the presented ideas, to be mobilizers, to enhance multiplier effects, to be impactful, to be structural for future work, to enhancing participation, making awareness and calling for change. Results: Attempting on this action plan that integrates 5 major initiatives underway at a national level, we intend to achieve the following results based on multiple participatory processes, such as: i) the presentation of the resulting recommendations to the Parliament in order to change the legal framework that regulates access to health information; ii) the identification of useful information for patients; iii) the development of a program consistent of concrete action proposals centered on the patient, for more information, more transparency and better access. This paper aims to present the project and the results already achieved with its implementation. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Portuguese primary and secondary education in times of COVID-19 Pandemic: an exploratory study on teacher training and challenges
The discussion about the use of digital technologies in education is not new. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the total closure of schools around the world, that forced millions of students to attend their classes from home, has demonstrated the importance of this discussion. It has highlighted the need to revisit debates about the interactions between technology and education, and the added value of digital resources to enhance the educational process. This article, based on an exploratory analysis, aims to understand how the transition from face-to-face to digital was accomplished in Portuguese primary and secondary education, namely regarding teacher training and the difficulties experienced during the emergency remote education period. The data analysed in this article were collected through an online questionnaire, disseminated through online social networks, and answered by 136 Portuguese primary and secondary education teachers. The questions focused on this article were open-ended, and the information collected was analysed using content analysis methodology. The results show how teachers have been forced to modify their pedagogical work, the importance of training, and the inherent challenges and critical reflections associated with the process, as well as the opportunities presented in a post-pandemic educational reality. ; This paper was published with the support of the Portuguese Government, through the Strategic Funding of the RD Unit UIDB/03126/2020. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Letter to the editor: virtual community of researchers and prevention experts: approximating drug research and practice fields
This paper presents the key findings of a virtual community of addiction experts set up to share evidence- based programmes of prevention on novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use in Portugal. Using a theoretical framework that combines contributions from a virtual community of practice and learning in a virtual environment, with prevention science, this paper traces how members interact in order to improve their prevention intervention domains and approaches, and consider the political and practical implications. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Sharing, group-buying, social supply, offline and online dealers: how users in a sample from six european countries procure New Psychoactive Substances (NPS)
Given the multiple ways of regulations and market situations for new psychoactive substances (NPS), it is of interest how NPS users procure their drugs in different countries as well as in different user groups. Data comes from a face-to-face and online survey conducted in six EU countries, covering three groups of current (12-month) adult NPS users: (1) socially marginalized, (2) users in night life, and (3) users in online communities. While the supply situation differed considerably between countries, friends were the most prevalent source for buying, followed by online shops and private dealers. Marginalized users were more likely to buy from dealers, while online respondents showed the highest rates for buying online. While buying NPS from online or offline shops was relatively prevalent, we also found high rates for social supply and buying from dealers. A considerable part of this market may be classified as "social online supply," with private suppliers procuring their drugs online. The market features among marginalized users resemble more those of illicit drug markets than those for other NPS users. ; The NPS Transnational project received funding from the European Commission under NPS-HOME/2014/JDRU/AG/DRUG/7077. The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland from financial resources for science in 2016–2017 granted for the implementation of an international co-financed project. The German partners received co-financing from the German Ministry of Health. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
