Im vorliegenden Aufsatz werden die Feuilletonromane in der liberalen deutschamerikanischen Presse von 1848 bis zum Bürgerkrieg am Beispiel der 'Geheimnisromane' von H. Börnstein und E. Klauprecht nach soziohistorischen Gesichtspunkten untersucht. Dabei wird die Vorbildfunktion des Fortsetzungsroman 'Les mysteres de Paris' von E. Sue für dieses Genre dargestellt. Die Geheimnisromane, die für die Autoren weniger gesellschaftliche Waffe sondern Mittel für die Auflagenverstärkung der Zeitungen war, dokumentieren den Prozeß der politischen und kulturellen Assimilation einer Gruppe deutscher Einwanderer. Sie spiegeln die Kritik der Autoren an der Verbindung der Demokratischen Partei zum Katholizismus und den Sklavenhaltern sowie die Problematik der Landspekulationen und des Nativismus. (KIL)
