Golden-Age Foundation of Platonic Political Theory: On the Myth of the 'Statesman' and the Religious Tradition ; Fundamentos áureos de la teoría política platónica: sobre el mito del Político y la tradición religiosa
This contribution aims to briefly review the literature and state of the art regarding the Myth of Plato's Statesman and to propose at first a new reading of such myth in light of the ancient Greek religious tradition and, specifically, of the Leitmotiv of the Hesiodic Myth of the Ages of Man. Secondly, we will put forward a comparison of this myth and its religious background with other political dialogues of the Athenian philosopher, notably with the Laws, which could point out the notion of the Golden Age and the divine government as a political ideal. The consideration of this passage of the Statesman in way of foundation of the mythical and allusive levels for these notions in other dialogues of Plato (especially in the Laws) would illustrate, if our working hypothesis is confirmed, the interaction of the global political project of the philosopher and the use of religious tradition and mythical examples of in other political dialogues.

Dionysus in Plato: Presence and Absence of the mask God ; Dioniso en Platón: presencia y ausencia del dios de la máscara
In this paper we put forward an approach to the philosophical use of the Greek god Dionysus in Plato's work, with particular reference to the platonic pedagogical- political thought in the Republic and, above all, in the Laws. Previous studies that have addressed this issue, including the latest two dealing with the Laws and the philosophical aspects of Dionysus are briefly discussed while presenting a new reading of the presence and absence of Dionysus in Plato through three dimensions –the symposium, the mysteries and education-oriented poetry– converging on the reformist political purpose of the Athenian philosopher.

During the 5th and 4th centuries BC, Egypt was a kind of conceptual mirror for the Greeks whenever they should speak of history, science or religion, and this is especially evident regarding the debate about the best form of government. The government of sages or priests, two of the utopian ideas most fi rmly rooted in Greek thought, fi nds a mythical basis in Egypt. This contribution aims to study the speech Busiris, by Isocrates, and its possible relationship with the Platonic projects of the Republic and, especially, the Laws. We will analyze the image of Egypt as an Utopian mirror and the various approaches to the historical and literary context of the relation bewteen Isocrates and Plato, from irony to political-philosophical proposals.

Divination and mantic practices played a very important role in several cultures of the ancient world, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to the end of classical paganism, when such procedures were gradually replaced by the new means of religious legitimation that Christianism provided for politics. This paper, presenting an introduction to this phenomenon in the Greek world, puts forward a new interdisciplinary approach to the issue and, at the same time, introduces and summarizes briefly the discussion of the panel «Divination and politics in the ancient world».

; This paper deals with the Greek transcription of Latin names Claudius and Clodius in the Life of Lucullus by Plutarch, recently translated into Spanish in Gredos Classical Library, and considers several options for translators of Classical languages when facing problems of ambiguity. Two different ways of writing nomen Claudius, which pointed out both learned and popular pronunciation, were used by the time of the late Roman Republic signifying also political differences between the members of that family, the Pulcher. However, in Plutarch's writings, one of the sources for biographical information about the members of this family, such difference, both phonetical and political, has created some ambiguities that have survived in modern translations of the Parallel Lives (into English, French, German, Italian, Catalan and Spanish). The aim of this paper, between the fields of Greek Philology and Translation Studies, is to clarify such variations and to propose a way to face them in the practice of translation.

In: Estudios Nietzsche, Heft 18, S. 117-129
ISSN: 1578-6676

Συνουσία in Late Antique Neoplatonic Schools: A Concept between Social History, History of Education and History of Philosophy
In: Literature, Band 4, Heft 1, S. 45-61
ISSN: 2410-9789
It is well studied that some Pythagorean principles lied at the foundations of the Late Antique Neoplatonic School. The main reason for that conclusion to be drawn is the two biographies of the Samian sage written by the Neoplatonic philosophers Porphyry of Tyre and Iamblichus of Chalcis. Accordingly, the archetypical image of Pythagoras became a major ideal for which every pagan philosopher aimed in Late Antiquity. Henceforth, masters and their disciple circles comprised a micro-society which can reasonably be analyzed as a whole. Suffice it to say that they were small and cohesive charismatic communities whose isolation from the outside world aroused a living harmony from which emerged long-standing emotional bonds. Consequently, the Pythagorically rooted κοινός βίος (Iambl. Vit. Pyth. 6.29: τὸ λεγόμενον κοινοβίους) can easily be ascertained in the biographical literature around the philosophical schools from Plotinus to Damascius (cf. Porph. Vit. Plot. 18.6-14; Procl. In Resp. passim). It is a way of life in common which was also known at the old Athenian Academy (according to Plato's only explicit reference to Pythagoras (Resp. 600a-b: Πυθαγόρειον τρόπον τοῦ βίου) and has sometimes been defined even as "coenobitic", in analogy with other contemporary phenomena. But from our point of view, it can be better understood through an analysis of the concept of συνουσία—that is, the meetings of philosophers with their companions (ἑταῖροι) in a specific place which turned into a sort of spiritual household. With this contribution, we aim at focusing on the redefinition of the Neoplatonic συνουσίαι as a legacy of the Platonic notion of συνουσία, stemming from Pythagorean κοινόβιοι. To sum up, we will revise this issue and the state of the art, with the redefinition of Late Antique συνουσία as a terminus technicus in the biographic literature around the Neoplatonic Schools, aiming at opening new paths for the understanding of the Pythagorean–Platonic heritage in Late Antiquity.
