Many surveys contain sensitive questions, for example, questions on sexuality, substance abuse, self-reported delinquency, or attitudes to foreigners. When answering such questions in survey interviews, many respondents do not respond truthfully and overreport positively connoted behaviors or attitudes (e.g., having voted in elections) and underreport negatively connoted ones (e.g., shoplifting). Also, many respondents refuse to answer at all, especially to questions on income. These phenomena are called social desirability bias and cause survey data to be not valid. We report the planning, design, process, difficulties, and results from a research project in which the item sum technique (IST) was experimentally tested against standard direct questioning (DQ) to tackle the problem of social desirability bias. The IST is a special questioning technique that, by adding random noise to the respondents' answers, anonymizes the interview situation and therefore raises respondent protection. In our project, IST was compared to DQ for the income question and a question on self-reported alcohol consumption. A CATI (computer-assisted telephone interviewing) survey (N = 499) in Mainz, Germany, provides the empirical data. The key findings show that nonresponse to the income question is reduced considerably by IST. Regarding self-reported alcohol consumption, the slightly higher estimates in IST format (as compared to DQ) fail to be statistically significant for the whole sample. For male and for higher educated respondents, however, IST yields significantly higher estimates of self-reported alcohol consumption.
; The results of the 2021 life events surveys of the Federal Statistical Office show that despite the pandemic, citizens and companies were largely satisfied with the contacts they had had with public administration in Germany. The 2021 satisfaction ratings decreased only marginally compared with the last survey of 2019. Most of the interviewees stated that the pandemic did not have a major effect on the services offered. However, it strengthened the trend to digitise government services. An increasing number of citizens and companies communicate with authorities online, fill in forms digitally and intend to contact public agencies more via the internet also in future. Actually, user expectations about e-government services seem to be rising as well.

AbstractThis article investigates whether and to what extent unfavorable local environmental conditions furnish an important motivator for environmental protest. We do so using individual-level data on objective and subjectively perceived residential road traffic and aircraft noise pollution, pertaining to the cities of Mainz (Germany) and Zurich (Switzerland). By referring to fine-grained noise data, we are able to test the predictive power of grievances and self-interest in explaining protest participation more stringently than has been the case in most previous studies. Theoretically, our study is inspired by Klandermans' socio-psychological framework of political protest, the pressure-response approach, the self-interest perspective, and the collective-interest model. Our empirical findings only partially confirm the grievances assumption that unfavorable local environmental conditions in the form of residential road traffic and aircraft noise stimulate environmental protest. Noise caused by airplanes seems to be more "protest-inducing" than that produced by road traffic. It is not so much the objectively measurable noise level as its subjective perception and evaluation that are deciding factors. However, in line with Klandermans' protest framework and other theories of political protest, there are more influential drivers of environmental protest, such as environmental concerns and a left-wing political ideology. Thus, the effects of residential road traffic and aircraft noise turn out to be relatively moderate. Ultimately, this means that our tailored measures of grievances corroborate a relatively well-established finding of protest research.

The paper describes the follow-up survey of the PinK study 'Paare in Kinderwunschbehandlung' (couples undergoing fertility treatment). This interdisciplinary study aims at a broader and better understanding of the situation of couples with an unfulfilled desire to have a child. The focus in the follow-up survey is on the situation of the couples one year after their first visit to a fertility clinic in Rhineland-Palatinate or in the capital of Hesse, Wiesbaden. Approximately one year after the baseline survey, self-administered questionnaires were sent to respondents who had signed a written agreement to remain in the study. The field period lasted from June 2013 to August 2014. The final sample consists of 140 women and 93 men. In 89 couples both partners participated. The longitudinal data set includes 224 respondents. The share of baseline survey participants who also participated in the follow-up is 39.6 %. This report describes the study design and materials for the follow-up as well as the sample and analyses the selectivity of dropouts from the baseline sample.
