El trabajo de la historiadora y archivista Victoria San Vicente Tello ha sido pilar no sólo para conocer el proceso de conformación del Centro de Información Gráfica en el Archivo General de la Nación, sino para comprender la evolución de esta dependencia desde los ochentas hasta nuestros días. Gracias a su capacidad organizativa logró conjuntar su pasión por la historia con la archivística. Su trabajo contribuyó a capacitar y profesionalizar al personal del AGN, en tanto se elaboraba la Guía General del Archivo General de la Nación, instrumento de consulta básica, donde logró unir esfuerzos para preservar la memoria documental del país.

Se incluye también una reseña de la importancia que tal actividad tuvo en el comercio interno que no siempre se abasteció de la introducción trasatlántica. Estos parámetros temporales sirven para indicar que dejo fuera de mis comentarios las actividades de esta naturaleza que se dieron a raíz de la liberalización del comercio mundial en el curso de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y especialmente aquel de los esclavos destinados a Cuba, Brasil y otros países del sur de la América continental. El énfasis está puesto, entonces, en el desarrollo del comercio y el debate del origen, la periodización y las cifras de esclavos introducidos en Nueva España que por supuesto están relacionados a la política y economía interna e internacional a las que la trata se hallaba indisolublemente vinculada.</span>

Desde otro punto de vista, cinco analizan el acceso y el ejercicio del poder en colectividades políticamente dependientes, bien sean comunidades locales (repúblicas de españoles de la Nueva España, municipios del Estado de México en la actualidad ) bien sean organizaciones (las metas novohispanas y las asociaciones de migrantes mexiquenses en Estados Unidos). Estos cinco estudios de caso comparten el análisis de variables que permiten distinguir tanto democracia de autoritarismo, como distintos tipos de democracia en los diversos ámbitos analizados. El sexto se concentra en el fenómeno de la esclavitud en la Nueva España.
los textos que componen este libro están emparentados porque tienen como eje de sus preocupaciones la democracia, por ser reflexiones producidas por personas que viven en iberoamérica y por tener a esta región como el objeto principal de sus preocupaciones (cuestión, esta última, que se manifiesta incluso en los apartados de carácter teórico). aunque las ideologías de sus autores no son en absoluto idénticas, éstos comparten algunas valoraciones, lo que permite detectar una serie de similitudes (incluso podría plantearse cierta complementariedad entre algunos de sus planteamientos, aunque este ejercicio no deja de implicar riesgos).

Esta Memoria del Tercer Simposium sobre Historia, Sociedad y Cultura de México y América Latina no sólo reúne 38 trabajos presentados durante el evento celebrado del 9 al 11 de octubre de 2007, sino que es constancia del interés de los investigadores y de las instituciones participantes por abordar temas que preocupan a la sociedad latinoamericana actual. ; El objetivo principal de este trabajo es doble. En el primer apartado, "Democracia y autoritarismo", se establecen y comentan sendas definiciones de democracia y autoritarismo que, en principio, se podrían aplicar a cualquier sistema político de la historia de la humanidad. En el segundo apartado, "Aspectos por considerar en estudios de caso sobre cualquier tipo de democracia", se mencionan algunos tópicos concretos involucrados en la concepción de democracia expuesta en el apartado anterior, con la finalidad de proporcionar elementos de análisis a quienes deseen aplicarlos a estudios de caso.
