Concerned with contemporary notions of personhood and the relationship between persons and places, this book, presents a detailed insight into the Vanua Lavan's engagement with modernity, and examines how they relate to the past, make sense of the present and anticipate the future. Marilyn Strathern's claim that the Melanesian person is a dividual by and large holds for the Vanua Lavan person. But Vanua Lavans have also been exposed to, and creatively engaged with, what can be summarised under the term 'Western individualism'. The author draws together several themes, discourses and conversations which concern Vanuatu specifically, the Pacific as a wider geographic area but also theoretical fields in anthropology: the relevance and expressions of sociality through kinship, concepts of person, issues about land and cosmology, the kastom debate, and questions about continuity and change. In doing so she provides a snapshot of contemporary notions of personhood

Abstract
Against the background of the ongoing collaborative research and archiving project "Re/assembling antiracisms in Germany," I discuss what anthropologists have to offer in highly complex settings of "activist expert cultures," and thus how such projects can best be designed. The paper argues that rather than thinking of such projects in terms of collaboration (or "co-laboration"), it is more about co-articulating the differently situated knowledges and experiences on offer, with anthropologists more and more taking on the role of a curator. By drawing on the concept of "para-sites," as proposed by Douglas Holmes and Georg Marcus, I further argue that it is no longer about helping others to find their voice but rather about creating spaces and infrastructures of listening.

Starting from a multi-sited research on migration strategies of Eastern European women to Germany, Sabine Hess shows that since the end of the cold war highly mobile, transnational fields have been emerging in Europe. On the other hand, critical scholars point out that the restrictive migration policies in & of the European Union can be described as a "fortress europe," sealing off the EU against unwanted migration. Normally these two findings are taken as contradiction. An anthropological position takes the transnationalisation of migration as proof that migrants are creative rebels of globalisation from below. On the other hand, the "fortress europe" position comes to the conclusion that the EU migration policies are apparently not working. But Hess argues that these two phenomena are not to be taken as a contradiction, rather transnationalisation can be understood as an intentional effect of the restrictive border regime. By following the ways of migrant women & their decision-making she can demonstrate the interconnections with the rigid migration policies which still exist even in the attempts of the migrants to circumvent them. But the classical conceptualisation of the functioning of the border cannot grasp these relations & thus have to be changed in favour of a Foucaultian reading of the border as a biopolitical space. In the end, transnational practices can be regarded as a creative strategy by migration to come to terms with the difficulties & uncertainties in the migrational context. But by the same token they are a strategy which is totally suitable to the political & economic needs of the new flexible mode of production of the western countries. 57 References.

(Autorenreferat)
