The relevance of the topic of urbanization is due, on the one hand, to the total spread of these processes around the world, and, on the other, to the specifics of changes in national social systems as a result of these processes. Vietnam's artisanal villages have undergone significant transformations, which can be studied through the use of sociological theories that explain the nature of the ongoing transformations at the macro- and micro-level of the village as a social organization and community. The article examines the changing func-tions of artisan villages in the course of urbanization on the basis of structural-functional theory, the emergence of new and the transformation of traditional behaviors – using M. Weber's classification of actions. With the help of R. Park's theory, the positive and negative outcomes of the urbanization processes of Vietnamese artisanal villages are outlined. For instance, the urbanization of villages contributed to the growth of incomes of the population, increased employment and living standards, the ability to meet the growing needs of the popula-tion, but it led to a reduction in the number of households engaged in traditional Vietnamese artistic creativity, contributed to an increase in the migration of rural artisans to cities. reduced the area of agricultural land and seriously worsened the environment.

This paper research the relationship between external debt and economic growth. Using the debt Laffer curve theory, the authors determine the maximum debt level of the Southeast Asian countries. Secondary data period 2006-2014 of 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are collected from the Asian Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund website. The authors use the method of regression for balanced panel data with a fixed effect model. The research results indicate that there exists a nonlinear relationship between external debt and economic growth in the Southeast Asian countries, including five variables: budget balance to gross domestic product, the lag of gross domestic product growth, the ratio of total investment to gross domestic product, the ratio of external debt to gross domestic product and the ratio of debt payments on exports of goods and services. These five variables are significant statistics and explain the meaning 24.87 % of the model. The other two: trade openness and trade index are not statistically significant. On the other hand, the research results have found the maximum debt level of the Southeast Asian countries, which is 70.42 %. Based on the study results, the authors suggest some recommendations to help the government of the Southeast Asian countries to build up the maximum debt levels, in line with the socio-economic development goals of their countries in each period. © 2018 Economy of Region. Agent Orange, which was sprayed in southern Vietnam by the American government, was the main source of dioxin exposure in Vietnam. From the early 1990s, agriculture of Vietnam has attained advances under intensive cultivation. Both production and yields per crop has raised significantly at the farm level, but, on the other hand, the quantity of pesticides used in agriculture has been increased in the absence of regulations and good practices. Illegal business of pesticides with false labels, as well as marketing of expired or poor quality products in stores without license are so popular in Vietnam. Misuse and improper use in agriculture in Vietnam has led to a variety of problems, such as environment pollution (including food producing animals) and adverse health impact on animals and humans. Open dumpsites worsen the general scenario. Similar to the environmental exposure, human exposure to DDT in Vietnam was ranked among the highest worldwide, with recognized effects. Exposed communities have to face birth defects, health disorders and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), from metabolic syndrome, asthma, infertility and other reproductive disorders through to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. A common feature of many chronic disorders and NCDs is metabolic disruption: environmental chemical factors disturb cellular homeostasis, thus affecting the ability of the body to restore a functional internal environment. Among these, endocrine disrupting pesticides can interfere with the action of hormones including metabolic hormones, and are likely to represent the main concern for developmentally-induced NCDs. Since pesticides are often persistent and bio-accumulate in the food chain through the living environment of food-producing organisms, this paper discusses relevant aspects of risk assessment, risk communication and risk management.

Rawal, LB orcid:0000-0003-1106-0108 ; Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have been increasing rapidly and are now the major cause of disease burden and deaths in the Asia Pacific region. This rising disease burden has challenged health systems in countries of the region and could hamper achievements of the Millennium Development Goals. This has raised concerns among policy-makers about the need to identify innovative approaches to control NCDs and meet the health needs of the public. Strengthening primary health care (PHC) services and the workforce to deliver such services has been considered as an option to address the growing need of services for NCDs. Community health workers (CHWs) have increasingly been recognized as a frontline health-care workforce to support government actions to combat NCDs. However, the role of CHWs within the PHC system is not well defined. To provide policy-makers with a package of options to engage CHWs in NCD care, this policy brief summarizes CHW-led programmes, describes challenges to integrating CHW-led NCD programmes and make recommendations. The development of this policy brief was based on experiences in four countries of the region – Bangladesh, China, Nepal and Viet Nam. However, it is worth emphasizing from the outset that our study is not designed to be representative of the four countries but exploratory in nature.

The functioning of food value chains entails a complex organisation from farm to fork which is characterised by various governance forms and externalities which have shaped the overall food system. VALUMICS food value chain case studies: wheat to bread, dairy cows to milk, beef cattle to steak, farmed salmon to fillets and tomato to processed tomato were selected to enable explorative and empirical analysis to better understand the functioning of the food system and, to identify the main challenges that need to be addressed to improve sustainability, integrity, resilience, and fairness of European food chains. The VALUMICS system analysis was executed through four operational phases starting with Groundwork & analysis including mapping specific attributes and impacts of food value chains and their externalities. This was followed by Case study baseline analysis, which provided input to the third phase on Modelling and exploration of future scenarios and finally Policy and synthesis of the overall work. This report is an overall synthesis of the VALUMICS results as follows: • Key findings from the VALUMICS project on the functioning of European food value chains and their impacts on more sustainable, resilient, fairer, and transparent food system are summarised through a compilation of 25 Research Findings and Policy Briefs. • By highlighting the major contributions from the research activities throughout the four phases of the VALUMICS project, this report delivers an assessment of various factors influencing sustainability, resilience, efficiency and fairness and effective chain relationships of different food value chains, and their determinants. • The synthesis of the outcome allows the identification of opportunities and challenges characterising the functioning of food supply chains, and thus, the prospects and potentials for strengthening the EU food sector. ; Citation: Olafsdottir, G., Bogason, S., Aubert, P.M., Barling, D., Thakur, M., Duric, I., Nicolau, M., McGarraghy, S., Sigurdardottir; H., ...
