Fotografische Augenzeugenschaft ; Ethische und ästhetische Perspektiven im World Press Photo-Wettbewerbsarchiv ; Photographic eyewitnessing ; Ethic and aesthetic perspectives in the World Press Photo Contest Archive
Die Arbeit verfolgt zwei Hauptziele. Zum einen geht es darum, mit dem Dispositiv der fotografischen Augenzeugenschaft eine wissenschaftliche Perspektive auf die journalistische Fotografie zu entwickeln, die sich von den etablierten repräsentationskritischen Topoi gegen die dokumentierende Fotografie abgrenzt. Dies geschieht mittels der Untersuchung der beiden zentralen fotojournalistischen Themen, der Repräsentation von Krieg und Gewalt sowie von Flucht und Migration im World Press Photo-Wettbewerbsarchiv. Damit bietet diese Arbeit zum anderen eine bildwissenschaftliche und diskursanalytische Studie des 1955 begründeten, inzwischen größten und renommiertesten Wettbewerbs für journalistische Fotografie. Im ersten Hauptkapitel (Kapitel II) wird eine theoretische und historische Charakteristik fotojournalistischer Bilder unternommen. Neben den Paradigmen von World Press Photo als Universalsprache, Archiv und Wettbewerb werden dabei insbesondere die humanitären und humanistischen Traditionen der fotografischen Augenzeugenschaft berücksichtigt. Die Analysen der Jahrbücher des Wettbewerbes und der Newsletter der Stiftung zeigen dann auf, wie sich das Selbstverständnis der fotojournalistischen Praxis in den fünf Jahrzehnten des Wettbewerbes auch unter der Veränderung der technischen Bedingungen stetig wandelt und ausdifferenziert. Die Kapitel III und IV wenden sich den fotografischen Ästhetiken und damit dem Zentrum des fotojournalistischen Dispositivs im World Press Photo-Archiv im Untersuchungszeitraum von 1989 bis 2005 zu. Ausgangspunkt sind die fotografischen Repräsentationen von tödlicher Gewalt, in denen der extreme Konflikt der ästhetischen Intentionen mit den ethischen Ansprüchen herausgearbeitet wird. Dies führt zu einer Problematisierung der epistemischen Begriffe von Beweis und Zeugnis und schließlich zu einer Definition der fotografischen Augenzeugenschaft, in der die Kulturen von ästhetischer Evidenz und ethischem Zeugnis konvergieren.
