A study of political talk radio listeners linked hypotheses from James E. Grunig's (1989) situational involvement theory of passive & active communication with concepts of political mobilization to demonstrate the significance of political talk activity, using 1992 telephone survey data from 583 English-speaking adults in San Diego, CA. Operational indicators of Grunig's concepts -- problem recognition, problem involvement, & problem constraint -- were related to exposure to political talk radio. Active exposure to political talk was related to political participation & paying attention to public affairs in programming, & effects of liberal & conservative hosts could be detected once the influences of major confounds were controlled by multiple regression. Ideologically charged talk show hosts may increase ideological & partisan sensitivity, possibly by priming, & political talk radio activity may stimulate political participation & attention to political events. Political talk radio may function as a form of civic entertainment, subscribed to by more politically attentive publics & thereby constituting a distinct mode of political participation. 1 Table, 24 References. THE IMPACT OF INTERPARTY COMPETITION ON ELECTORAL TURNOUT IS SUBJECTED TO SYSTEMATIC LONGITUDINAL & CROSS-SECTIONAL QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS. INTERPARTY COMPETITION IN IND COUNTIES IS CORRELATED WITH ELECTORAL TURNOUT IN THE YEARS 1876-1968, BASING SEVERAL MEASURES OF COMPETITION ON VOTES FOR THE OFFICE OF SECRETARY OF STATE--A STATE OFFICE GENERALLY TAKEN BY PARTY REGULARS WITHOUT STRONG POPULAR FOLLOWINGS & WELL CORRELATED WITH OTHER VOTING PATTERNS. R OF COMPETITION WITH TURNOUT WAS SIGNIFICANT ACCORDING TO A VARIETY OF MEASURES, EVEN AFTER CONTROLLING FOR MAJOR SOCIAL CHANGES, 3RD-PARTY CAMPAIGNS, LIFE-STYLE PATTERNS, & SIMILAR FACTORS. 1 FIGURE, 1 TABLE. Based on a sample of Ohio adult residents with telephones (weighted to represent a cross-section of the entire Ohio adult pop), this study revealed that an alarming number of people had been contacted at least once by salesmen posing as survey res'ers. The study also shows that salesmen are most likely to pose as survey res'ers among people who are most likely to be the target of legitimate survey res. AA.
