Due to the internationalisation of companies and the immigration into Switzerland, Swiss companies today employ people from different backgrounds and with different mother tongues on all hierarchy levels. Thus, multilingual teams are becoming more common. The lingua franca, or common working language in these teams is often English or German; for many team members these are foreign or second languages. So far, research has paid too little attention to the linguistic challenges multilingual teams face and to the strategies they employ to efficiently master their communicative tasks. Even though several studies within organisational psychology and small group research look at the relationship between cultural diversity and group performance, they limit interculturality to values and ethnicity without or only implicitly taking into account language, thus neglecting its impact. On the other hand, communication in teams is being researched linguistically, but not from the angle of communicative efficiency and teamwork optimisation. Consequently, language diversity and strategies of coping with language diversity in team communication are mostly absent in psychological research and communicative efficiency is only a minor subject in organisational psychology. The main goal is to analyse how communicative efficiency in multilingual company-internal teams is attained. Our research question is whether communicative efficiency depends on the team's ability to manage its diversity of languages, i.e. to master specific linguistic and communicative challenges in the company appropriately. Since the project is at the intersection of linguistic communication and team performance in organisations, it calls for an approach that combines linguistic methods with methods of organisational psychology and that is based on action theory and functional-pragmatic communication analysis as a common framework, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. The data from two partner companies serve as case studies which are compared in a contrastive design. The findings of the study will help our partners in practice to foster multilingual teams and to establish a best-practice model that may be adapted for the use with other teams. This contrastive design with two partners in practice each having their own specific linguistically diverse work groups, enables an exemplary approach to linguistically diverse work groups, which are most common in this form in a large number of Swiss companies. As contrastive case studies they therefore help to gain new insights into the research area. ; Sowohl durch die zunehmende Internationalisierung als auch durch Migrationsbewegungen in die Schweiz arbeiten Teams in Unternehmen auf allen hierarchischen Stufen vermehrt in sprachdiversen Konstellationen. Oftmals werden Deutsch oder Englisch als lingua franca zur Verständigung verwendet. In dem vorliegenden Projekt wird untersucht, welche kommunikativen Probleme sich durch die Sprachdiversität von Teams ergeben und welche Bewältigungsstrategien diese entwickeln, um die kommunikative Effizienz in Teamsitzungen sicherzustellen. Diese Fragestellungen werden sowohl aus linguistischer Perspektive als auch aus organisationspsychologischer Sicht bearbeitet. In zwei betrieblichen Fallstudien werden in einem transdisziplinären Design Teamsitzungen mit funktional-pragmatischen Methoden analysiert und mit organisationalen Rahmenbedingungen sowie individuellen Bewältigungsstrategien in Beziehung gesetzt. Erste Ergebnisse zeigen, dass in Abhängigkeit von der individuellen Erfahrung in der Zusammenarbeit in sprachdiversen Teams, von der Teamkonstellation und in Abhängigkeit von der Sprachpolitik des Unternehmens Mitarbeitende Kommunikationsstrategien entwickeln, welche zum einen zur kommunikativen Effizienz beitragen. Dazu gehören z.B. das Aushelfen mit Vokabeln, mehrmaliges Erklären oder fehlertolerantes Verhalten. Zum anderen verursachen sie aber auch dysfunktionale Effekte wie unsachgemässe Vereinfachungen, ungenaue Auftragsvergabe durch Moderator/innen und fehlende Partizipation der Mitarbeitenden an Sitzungen und Entscheidungen. Durch den transdisziplinären Ansatz können komplexe Zusammenhänge und positive und negative Effekte der kommunikativen Strategien aufgezeigt werden. This paper investigates the diversity issue in business contexts in Switzerland from a linguistic perspective and reports the results of field activities in two multinational enterprises. Using a qualitative-empirical approach, the paper analyses two interviews with Heads of Communication in charge of the development and implementation of communication strategies for a culturally and linguistically diverse workforce. Particular attention is paid to the role of English as the corporate language, and to attitudes towards language. A methodological agenda will be proposed which is intended as a contribution to the field of Linguistic Diversity Management. ; Dieser Beitrag untersucht den Problembereich der sprachlich-kulturellen Diversität in multinationalen Unternehmen der Schweiz aus einer pragmatischen Perspektive. Ausgehend von Interviews mit Entscheidungsträgern aus den Kommunikationsabteilungen zweier multinationaler Firmen geht der Beitrag der Frage nach, wie und in welchen Zusammenhängen die kulturelle und sprachliche Diversität der Belegschaft in die Kommunikationspraxis solcher Entscheidungsträger einfliesst und die Sprachpolitik des Unternehmens bestimmt. Ärztemangel führte in Deutschland und der Schweiz zu internationalen Rekrutierungen und Ärztemigration. Seit 2012 haben in der Schweiz jährlich mehr als 50% der neu akkreditierten Fachärzte ihr Diplom und ihre postgraduale Spezialisierung im Ausland erworben. Berichte über Kommunikationsprobleme (z. B. fremder Akzent, fehlender spezifischer Wortschatz, fehlende sprachliche Handlungsmuster) führten in der Schweiz u. a. zu politischen Massnahmen, um die Zahl der im Inland ausgebildeten Medizinerinnen und Mediziner zu erhöhen. Eine kritische Neubewertung auch der ethischen Aspekte von Ärztemigration steht noch am Anfang. Nicht beforscht wurde bislang, welche Auswirkungen sie auf das professionelle Selbstbild von Ärzten und Ärztinnen hat. Welche Rolle spielen Sprache und sprachliche Reflexion bei der Anpassung einer "mehrsprachigen beruflichen Identität"? Ärztinnen und Ärzte, Psychologen und Therapeutinnen, die in einem Land praktizieren, das nicht ihr Herkunftsland ist, in dem sie als "Ausländer" oder als Mensch mit Migrationshintergrund angesehen werden, und die in der Arzt-Patienten-Kommunikation bzw. der Therapeuten-Klienten-Kommunikation entweder die Sprache des Patienten/ der Klientin als L2 oder eine gemeinsame Lingua Franca (z. B. Englisch) verwenden, können als 'international doctors' bezeichnet werden. Sie treten als ausgebildete medizinische Fachleute in eine neue Sprachgemeinschaft und Gesellschaft ein und haben fortan ein allophones oder mehrsprachiges Arbeitsumfeld, in dem eine andere Sprache als ihre L1 Arbeits- und Amtssprache ist. Da die Entwicklung einer "beruflichen Identität" als Teil des Ausbildungsprozesses zum Arzt angesehen wird, stellt sich die Frage, welche Veränderungen des 'professional self' diese grosse Gruppe von "international doctors" durch das Arbeiten in einer L2 erfährt. Die qualitative Studie basiert auf Interviews mit Ärztinnen und Ärzten, Psychologinnen und Therapeuten, die in Deutschland und der deutschsprachigen Schweiz mehrsprachig bzw. in einer L2 arbeiten. Komplementierend wurden einige Audioaufnahmen von Patienten- bzw. Klienten-Gesprächen der Interviewten erhoben. Die Daten eröffnen Einblicke in die professionelle Interaktion in einem mehrsprachigen Gesundheitssystem ohne die Hilfe von Dolmetschenden.

In foreign and second language teaching, a close relation between language and cultural learning is undisputedly recognised (Altmayer 2010). Intercultural competences, in terms of the ability to relate to a foreign culture, to overcome stereotypes by means of building relationships, and to be willing and capable of stepping back from one's own cultural perspective are important prerequisites for living in multicultural societies and therefore form objectives of intercultural learning in L2 classrooms (Glaboniat et al. 2005: 103). In the CEFR extension (Council of Europe 2018), mediation and plurilingual/pluricultural competences are explicitly addressed, and linguistic enablement in order to participate in pluralistic democratic societies in Europe has become a recent focus in curricula (Beacco et al. 2016; Council of Europe 2016). In the context of German-speaking Switzerland, as part of a project funded by cantonal authorities, teaching materials were developed that aim to raise adult learners' awareness of pluralistic societal relationships and promote intercultural competence. The materials support a positive attitude in dealing with diversity, and at the same time they offer refugees and migrants opportunities to participate in and to shape the discourse on diversity in the host society. The materials were tested in various language courses and disseminated in teacher training workshops. In the current paper, experiences and reflections on intercultural competence as a goal in the L2 classroom with adults will be discussed in relation to these teaching materials.
