The economic foundations of virtue: Widow-remarriage in early and modern China

Where women's property rights were concerned, two fundamental principles operated in Chinese society from Qin-Han times through to the Republican era in the 20th century. These were: (i) the customary right of a daughter to dowry and (ii) the customary transfer of the property rights of a son to his widow. This study demonstrates how change in economic and legal variables associated with these principles could produce a dramatic change in attitudes to marriage, in particular to the remarriage of widows.
