E-learning is the subject of numerous debates. The contributions to this book are meant to intensify and broaden these discussion. The authors place their focus on higher and further education as important sectors for the application of e-learning with the aim to link up both areas. Here information technology, pedagogy and Business and Human Resource Education are analysed. The authors' contributions show how educational aspects and questions of organisation and information technology can be interlinked and use this connection to derive new areas of application for e-learning concepts.

PurposeIn response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many employees had to switch to remote work. While some adjusted successfully to this transition, others have struggled. Leveraging information systems (IS) to adjust to major exogenous shocks is called digital resilience. The purpose of this paper is to understand what we can learn about employees' digital resilience from externally enforced transitions to remote work.Design/methodology/approachAs digital resilience is challenging to measure, this study uses an embedded mixed methods approach. The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of 40 employees' statements on their remote work experience during the first six months of the pandemic and complemented these findings with scale-based digital resilience scores.FindingsThe authors find that employees' digital resilience largely depends on the amount of technical equipment and support they receive from their organizations as well as their ability and willingness to learn how to adequately use and communicate through information and communication technologies. Being self-disciplined and self-responsible positively affects digital resilience, while social isolation threatens it. Organizations can foster digital resilience building by encouraging digital networking, building a digital culture and netiquette, and treating digital resilience as a sociotechnical phenomenon.Originality/valueThis is one of the first empirical studies of digital resilience on a human level. It sheds light on the missing link between IS-enabled resilience and transitions to remote work. Specifically, it provides original insights into its development and manifestation in a remote work context during the COVID-19 pandemic. For researchers, it provides novel guidance on choosing appropriate measurement instruments to capture digital resilience.

Smartphone apps are regularly updated and enhanced. However, design overhauls—that change the whole look of an app—are not expected to impact a user's behavior and, more specifically, continuance intentions. We reevaluate this claim based on the overwhelmingly negative feedback the social multimedia messaging app Snapchat received following a design overhaul released in February 2018. Following a mixed-method approach, we first analyze Snapchat's app ratings and their significant drop after the release of the update, using a Chow-test. Second, we use text mining to analyze a data set of 737,182 text reviews from the Google Play Store. We thereby provide empirical evidence that a design overhaul led to a significant decrease in app store ratings and started a social media firestorm among its users. Third, to theoretically explain the causes of the decrease in ratings, we conducted interviews with 26 Snapchat users. We contribute to the current discussion in IS research debates concerning whether perceived ease of use does play an essential role in the post-adoption context: We find evidence that substantial changes in an app design triggers a new adoption process and impacts the perceived ease of use, and thus, in particular, we contribute to the theoretical understanding of how users perceive design overhauls.
