In: Monde chinois: nouvelle Asie ; revue trimestrielle, Band 50, Heft 2, S. 38-45
In: Politique internationale: pi, Heft 146, S. 1-5
ISSN: 0221-2781
The Chinese economic miracle is running out of breath... literally. The vertiginous development of the world's most populous country over the past twenty years has gone hand in hand with a disastrous side effect that the authorities have long chosen to ignore, namely horrific pollution. The myriad factories, mines and construction sites that continue to mushroom all over China are an absolute calamity for the environment. The air in large cities is unbreathable, the rivers are clogged with industrial waste and the soil is poisoned, with the result that most foodstuffs are toxic. No prizes for guessing the impact on public health. By going all out for unfettered growth, has the country sold its future down the river, so to speak? A flicker of awareness of the problem's enormity seems to be starting to dawn, including-tentatively-among China's politicians. But it might already be too late. Adapted from the source document.
LE NOUVEAU VISAGE DE LA CAUSE TIBETAINE
In: Politique internationale: pi, Band 134
ISSN: 0221-2781
The Tibetan political scene underwent a real upheaval in 2011: the Dalai Lama decided to transfer his political and administrative responsibilities to an executive body directed by a head of government elected by popular vote. This marks a fundamental change, since the traditional form of government, bringing together religious and political power, is replaced by one with separation of religion and state. In this exclusive interview with Marie Holzman for Politique Internationale, Lobsang Sangay, just elected to this eminent position, reviews his career and describes the extent of the tasks awaiting him. His priority is to hold talks with the representatives of Beijing, to discuss the conditions for Tibetan autonomy. This mission is urgent, since Tibet is foundering under the double hammer blows of the growing Chinese Han population and political repression ordered by the Communist Party. CHINE: LES AVOCATS DE L'ESPOIR

Jiang Tianyong is the figurehead of an informal group of lawyers the Chinese have dubbed "civil rights defense lawyers". In recent years these attorneys have progressively become the country's most active militants in support of human rights, carrying the torch passed by political dissidents who have been sentenced to long prison terms or expelled to Western countries. Harassed, persecuted, and sometimes imprisoned, all of them defend a common ideal: the supremacy of law over arbitrary decisions and the victory of reason over violence. In an extensive interview with Marie Holzman, Jiang Tianyong explains how his country really works and the legal hurdles he faces daily. He believes that China will embrace democracy in the medium term, but at the same time firmly believes that this transition will only happen once the Chinese people become fully aware of their legitimate rights and the political powers that be no longer consider themselves above the law. On October 1, 2009, the People's Republic of China celebrated its sixtieth anniversary. Theoretically, the celebrations were about commemorating sixty years of "glory" & declaring that the future would be even more glorious. However, there are many at both ends of the social scale who are wondering why China has essentially changed so little. Why has the Communist Party remained the only political party, as intolerant as it was in the early days? Why hasn't economic success led to real political reform? And what happened to the fine ideals of yesteryear? More than seventy years of uninterrupted rule passed before the demise of the USSR's communist party. The Chinese communist party will no doubt beat that record, & the Chinese look back today over this long history & wonder what they should conserve from it. At the state's executive level, reform is at an impasse. At the same time, opponents, whose numbers lessen by the day & who are hounded wherever they go, no longer have the strength to combat totalitarianism. Adapted from the source document.
