AN EXAMINATION OF THE BELGIAN GENERAL ELECTIONS OF 21 MAY 1995 REVEALS RESULTS FAR DIFFERENT FROM WHAT MANY EXPECTED. THE SOCIALISTS, DESPITE THEIR CORRUPTION SCANDALS, MAINTAINED ELECTORAL SUPPORT. THE GREENS, HOWEVER, (BOTH THE FRENCH SPEAKING ECOLO AND THE DUTCH SPEAKING AGALEV) EXPERIENCED THEIR FIRST ELECTORAL LOSS SINCE THEIR EMERGENCE IN THE LATE 1970'S. THESE RESULTS ARE NOT SO SURPRISING WHEN SEEN IN THE LIGHT OF THE POLITICAL RESHUFFLE WHICH BEGAN IN 1991. THE FUTURE WILL LIKELY SEE LITTLE IN THE WAY OF FUNDAMENTAL POLITICAL CHANGE FOR SOME TIME TO COME.
