This is the fourth volume produced by the same editors, and is a collection of 22 articles from the Fourth Conference on Social Indicators in Chinese Societies organized by these four Hong Kong academics in 2000. The authors are social scientists (especially sociologists) specializing in social indicators research in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
Investigates the Tawianese manifestations of four processes & phenomena of cultural globalization as identified by Peter L. Berger (1997) -- international business ("Davos") culture; global popular ("McWorld") culture; faculty club or world intellectual culture; & popular religious culture. Focus is on the intersection of these globalizing cultural forces & traditional Taiwanese culture, particularly at the local level. Indigenous responses to the processes of cultural globalization are analyzed, revealing varying degrees of synthesis of the local & the global. Despite the power of globalizing cultural forces since the 1980s, it is concluded that Taiwan has maintained its cultural diversity & continued to promote its cultural heterogeneity. 19 References. (pre)
