Abstract
The concept of the metaverse, a virtual world with immersive 3-D environments, has gained significant attention and is expected to affect how we interact and communicate. While there is no consensus on its future, many brands are preparing for its potential. The metaverse offers unique marketing opportunities, enabling brands to provide offerings that are impossible in the real world. It can serve as a third space for retailing, where brands can create immersive experiences and overcome physical limitations. Metaverse advertising should be interactive and immersive to maximize its potential, while brand communities and events in the metaverse offer new avenues for engagement. The metaverse also allows companies to unlock new revenue streams through virtual products, NFT collections and digital twins. However, the metaverse brings challenges, including technical issues, privacy concerns, avatar misbehavior and the need for virtual and real coexistence. Brands must navigate these challenges and conduct further research to understand and maximize the benefits while minimizing risks in the metaverse.

The issues inherent in caring for an ever-increasing aged population has been the subject of endless debate and continues to be a hot topic for political discussion. The use of hospital-based facilities for the monitoring of chronic physiological conditions is expensive and ties up key healthcare professionals. The introduction of wireless sensor devices as part of a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) integrated within an overall eHealth solution could bring a step change in the remote management of patient healthcare. Sensor devices small enough to be placed either inside or on the human body can form a vital part of an overall health monitoring network. An effectively designed energy efficient WBAN should have a minimal impact on the mobility and lifestyle of the patient. WBAN technology can be deployed within a hospital, care home environment or in the patient's own home. This study is a review of the existing research in the area of WBAN technology and in particular protocol adaptation and energy efficient cross-layer design. The research reviews the work carried out across various layers of the protocol stack and highlights how the latest research proposes to resolve the various challenges inherent in remote continual healthcare monitoring.

The complex and interdependent nature of smart cities raises significant political, technical, and socioeconomic challenges for designers, integrators and organisations involved in administrating these new entities. An increasing number of studies focus on the security, privacy and risks within smart cities, highlighting the threats relating to information security and challenges for smart city infrastructure in the management and processing of personal data. This study analyses many of these challenges, offers a valuable synthesis of the relevant key literature, and develops a smart city interaction framework. The study is organised around a number of key themes within smart cities research: privacy and security of mobile devices and services; smart city infrastructure, power systems, healthcare, frameworks, algorithms and protocols to improve security and privacy, operational threats for smart cities, use and adoption of smart services by citizens, use of blockchain and use of social media. This comprehensive review provides a useful perspective on many of the key issues and offers key direction for future studies. The findings of this study can provide an informative research framework and reference point for academics and practitioners.

Government edicts and national time bound policy directives are shaping the drive toward cost effective renewables such as photovoltaics (PV). Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) has the potential to provide significant energy generation by utilising the existing building infrastructure as a power generator, engendering a transformation shift from traditional energy sources. This research presents an innovative study on the industrial viability of utilising "rough" low carbon steel integrated with an Intermediate Layer (IL) to develop lower cost thin film BIPV products and is compared to existing commercial products. Consideration of the final product cost is given and potential business models to enter the BIPV are identified. The lab scale and upscaling elements of the research support the significant benefits of an approach that extends beyond the use of expensive solar grade steel. A state-of-the-art review of existing steel-based BIPV products is given and used as a benchmark to compare the new products. The results demonstrate that a competitively commercial product is viable and also highlight the strong potential for the adoption of a "rough" steel + IL focused approach to BIPV manufacture and a potential new direction to develop cost efficiencies in an increasingly competitive market.

PurposeEver since its emergence, the metaverse has presented opportunities and disruptions to every stakeholder, including individual users and organizations. This article aims to offer valuable perspectives on six identified critical areas that the metaverse could significantly impact: marketing ethics, marketing communication, relationship marketing, retail marketing, supply chain management and transportation management.Design/methodology/approachThrough a multi-perspective approach, this paper gathers valuable perspectives from various invited contributors to each of the six identified key areas that the metaverse could significantly impact.FindingsFor each key area identified, the invited contributors first share their valuable perspectives by discussing the roles of the metaverse. Subsequently, the invited contributors discuss their views on vital opportunities, challenges and research agenda concerning the metaverse.Originality/valueWith the widespread metaverse, it is expected that each key area identified is likely to undergo significant levels of disruption. Against this backdrop, this paper contributes to the academic literature and industry by gathering different perspectives from invited contributors on the relevance of the metaverse in marketing and logistics domains.
