Since the year 2000, the number of blue helmet soldiers and policemen employed in UN missions has increased fivefold to a strength of currently round about 70,000 personnel. The Security Council of the United Nations has mandated five new peacekeeping missions in the past two years alone. In view of this sharp increase the UNO is being faced with big challenges. On the one hand, it can refer to considerable successes. lt was thus possible to successfully complete two peace missions in East Timor and in Sierra Leone, and to allow free eleotions to be held, inter alia, in Burundi and Liberia. On the other hand lt is obvious that the limits of the load capacity have been reached. There is an increasing need for reforms and support. And Germany, too, will make its respective contribution to that. (Europäische Sicherheit / SWP)
