This article explores the mediatization of birthdays and anniversaries through the concept of "on-this-date" media as a way to understand the representation and circulation of media content that occurred in previous years, on that exact date. Drawing on journalism studies and mediated memory work, I argue that past events are made relevant and then irrelevant through a frame of on-this-date media. By juxtaposing Facebook Birthdays and Memories with the Associated Press's "Today In History" feed, I analyze the multiple temporalities at work across analog and digital media platforms. Drawing on Keightley's zones of intermediacy, I examine how time is mediated through the textual, technological, and social aspects of media, in sometimes conflicting ways. Thus, this article seeks to contribute to our understanding of mediatization by examining how media institutions structure, organize, and represent mediated temporalities.

Around every new media technology debates circle about whether the technology is bringing people socially closer or pushing us further apart. According to popular press accounts, Pokémon GO players are absorbed into a game world on their phone with no attention or interest in the "real" world around them. But coupled with these accounts are stories of people exploring their neighborhoods and of marriage proposals in the midst of Pokémon hunting. This article puts Pokémon GO into a longer context of mobile technologies and sociospatial practice to explore the kinds of social interactions that can emerge around and through the use of Pokémon GO. In particular, the article explores how people can use the platform as both an involvement shield and social catalyst.

This article explores the future research opportunities and challenges of mobile social media. First, I problematize what constitutes the boundaries of mobile social media. Distinctions between location-based mobile social networks and non-location-based mobile social networks are established to suggest that the mobility of social media is in fact much broader than location alone. Second, several key theoretical questions are identified for future exploration, including micro, meso, and macro-level theories. Lastly, methodological challenges and opportunities are reflected upon and culminate in the call for multi-disciplinary programs of research to fully understand the role of mobile social media in the world today.

The development and proliferation of mobile social networks have the potential to transform ways that people come together and interact in public space. These services allow new kinds of information to flow into public spaces and, as such, can rearrange social and spatial practices. Dodgeball is used as a case study of mobile social networks. Based on a year-long qualitative field study, this article explores how Dodgeball was used to facilitate social congregation in public spaces and begins to expand our understanding of traditional notions of space and social interaction. Drawing on the concept of parochial space, this article examines how ideas of mobile communication and public space are negotiated in the everyday practice and use of mobile social networks.

Cellphones provide a unique opportunity to examine how new media both reflect and affect the social world. This study suggests that people map their understanding of common social rules and dilemmas onto new technologies. Over time, these interactions create and reflect a new social landscape. Based upon a year-long observational field study and in-depth interviews, this article examines cellphone usage from two main perspectives: how social norms of interaction in public spaces change and remain the same; and how cellphones become markers for social relations and reflect tacit pre-existing power relations. Informed by Goffman's concept of cross talk and Hopper's caller hegemony, the article analyzes the modifications, innovations and violations of cellphone usage on tacit codes of social interactions.

The age of digital media has given rise to a new social world. It is a world in which the transmission of information from the few to the many is steadily being supplanted by the multi-directional flow of facts, lies, and ideas. It is a world in which hundreds of millions of people are voluntarily depositing large amounts of personal details in publicly accessible databases. It is a world in which interpersonal relationships are increasingly being conducted in the virtual sphere. Above all, this is a world that seems to be veering off in unpredictable ways from the trends of the immediate past. This book is a probing examination of that world, and of the changes that it has ushered into our lives

Municipalities across the US are investing in smart technologies that rely on data collection tools and devices. Though proposals to procure these technologies often describe the benefits of optimization, privacy concerns and asymmetrical data access remain. Some municipalities are working to minimize such concerns by developing community working groups to evaluate the adoption of surveillance technologies. Many of these organizations have an explicit interest in geomedia technologies, yet their goals, composition, and technology review processes differ. We examined working groups from four US cities - Boston, Seattle, Syracuse, and Vallejo - to identify how group members articulate different sociotechnical imaginaries of geomedia. Through interviews with working group members and an analysis of public documents, we examine how working groups imagine the future use, and misuse, of these technologies in their communities. In turn, this project highlights how multi-stakeholder governance can shape decision-making about geomedia futures.

The mobile ontology of locative media and ubiquity of location-aware technologies have led to an explicit focus on "where" and an implicit focus on "when" in geomedia studies. While welcoming this focus, we argue that this spatial bias has led the temporal dimensions of geomedia to be overlooked. Despite the growing interest that draws academic attention to mediation of time and temporal dimensions of media and data practices, there is still limited discussion on time and temporality of geomedia. We aim to fill this gap and open a debate about the temporality of geomedia based on seven oral history interviews that we conducted with mobile media scholars who pioneered in research in mobile phones from late 1990s onwards. These historical accounts include the narratives of how mobile phones were used for time-keeping, synchronizing, presencing, and coordinating everyday life. Hence, this article grounds mediation of time in the histories of geomedia.

Mobile dating apps like Tinder became very popular among young adults, and, in contrast to mobile dating websites, they were designed to create a more game-like experience. While it is well documented that seeking entertainment is one core motivation for mobile dating app use, the social nature of entertainment has garnered less attention. Therefore, in this paper we draw on research on entertainment in dating apps and the socio-physical contexts of use to identify patterned behaviors of heterosexual users. To do this, we employed a qualitative multi-phase research approach. First, we conducted 20 interviews with mobile dating app users. Based on the findings from that study, we conducted gender-specific focus groups and a discourse analysis to explore the social phenomena identified in phase one. Our findings suggest the fun of mobile dating is not just interacting with potential matches through the apps, but the use of the apps among one's friends. These "dating games" are entertaining, but importantly mitigate potential social or physical risks of mobile dating. Unsurprisingly, notions of "play" across the interview, focus group, and discourse analyses reflect highly gendered practices surrounding mobile dating apps and different risks associated with such games.

This article reports on the findings from a field study of mobile phone use among dyads in public. Replicating an originally published field study from 2005, this study highlights how mobile phones and use have changed in the last 15 years and demonstrates the ways that mobile phones are used to both detract and enhance social interactions. Drawing on the notions of cellphone crosstalk and caller hegemony, we identify behavioral responses to mobile phones and the use of mobile phones by others, which help to manage both face-to-face and mediated social expectations of responsiveness. Based on observational fieldwork and interviews, we identify specific behavioral categories that demonstrate how social vulnerability and ostracism due to mobile phone use may be mitigated through parallel or collective mobile phone use. We also expand the original concepts of cellphone crosstalk and caller hegemony to mediated crosstalk and notification hegemony to account for contemporary changes in the sociotechnical mobile landscape.
