When conducting ethnographic research, immersion into the field and participant observation are essential characteristics of the methodology. As more traditional forms of ethnography have evolved over time to include contemporary approaches (institutional ethnography, feminist ethnography), so too have the fields where such research is undertaken. Indeed, the field itself is now recognized as a construction rather than a naturally occurring space. This article discusses the approach taken to co-construct the field for a critical ethnographic study of immigrants' experiences within a Canadian Francophone minority community. It addresses how the researcher made key decisions shaping who the study population would be, and in collaboration with the participants then decided how and where data generation would occur.

Le rôle des représentations sociales et spatiales dans les processus d'inclusion et d'exclusion constitue un terrain d'étude privilégié pour comprendre les relations de pouvoir entre groupes dominants et dominés. Le but de cet article est de poser un regard nouveau sur cette question en adoptant le concept d'imaginaires géographiques pour examiner les représentations que des immigrants et des réfugiés d'expression française se font des communautés francophones en situation minoritaire (CFSM) au Canada. Pour ce faire, nous présentons les résultats d'une étude de cas instrumentale sur les expériences d'immigrants francophones dans deux villes comportant des CFSM en Ontario : London et Ottawa. Notre analyse met en lumière les dynamiques sociospatiales de la francophonie minoritaire canadienne telles qu'elles sont perçues par les immigrants francophones et leur rôle dans la négociation de leur appartenance.

AbstractIn becoming host communities for Francophone immigrants in the early 2000s, Canada's Francophone minority communities (FMCs) are facing the test of moving away from a predominant ethnic nationalism to an inclusive civic nationalism. The reception and integration of Black and Francophone immigrants is therefore a relevant indicator of the success of this test. Drawing on critical race theory and bricolage methodology, we reconstruct the ambiguous relationship between FMCs and their Black francophone immigrants who are both invited into French society and discriminated against.

Abstract Introduction Immigrants may experience many barriers to social participation within host societies. Immigrants' integration into Canadian society is supported through government-funded services. Objective In the present study, we explored the perspectives of service providers working in community organizations regarding their role in enabling immigrants' social participation through occupations in British Columbia, Canada. Method Representatives from twenty different organizations providing services to the community participated in a constructivist qualitative study aiming to uncover aspects shaping opportunities for occupational participation provided for immigrants. Results Drawing on semi-structured interviews and using thematic analysis, we identified three main themes relating to cultivating social occupations, spaces, and networks. Findings illustrate that service providers' cultivation of these opportunities can support immigrants' desired social roles and social identities, further enabling their participation in receiving societies. Conclusion Emphasis upon supporting socio-economic integration into society appears to limit a client-centred approach to developing opportunities for social participation through occupation. Implications for occupational therapists and scientists are discussed.

AbstractImmigration policy in Canada has recently shifted, reflecting changes in other Western countries. We studied the discursive constructions of forced migrants within Bill C‐31 "Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act" and its associated Backgrounder documents published by the Canadian Government. The documents were analysed using an approach to critical discourse analysis adapted from Bacchi's (2009) methodology and informed by a theoretical framework of "othering". Particular groups of migrants were represented as posing threats to the economy, the integrity of the refugee system, and national security. The documents offered three solutions: the creation of specific categories of migrants, an emphasis upon efficiency of the system, and expanded powers to the government. The problematization of asylum seekers as posing multiple threats to Canadian society obfuscates governmental responsibilities to this population and reflects common strategies of neoliberal governance.

Au Canada, au gouvernement fédéral et dans plusieurs provinces, le principe d'offre active sert à guider la prestation des services publics en français. L'Ontario se démarque, car son approche est en partie volontaire. Il importe donc d'étudier comment les services en français sont intégrés à la gouvernance des services publics au sein de la province. Cet article puise dans les données gouvernementales existantes afin de brosser un tableau de l'offre active de services en français en santé mentale. Or, les auteurs montrent que ces données sont difficiles à obtenir et parcellaires. L'article sert à souligner des défis importants pour l'offre de services en français dans le domaine de la santé mentale en Ontario.
