"During the last three decades or so there has been a significant growth of extreme right voter support, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The chapters in this book look at an earlier period before most of this increase. Comprised of eight previously published articles or book chapters and two hitherto unpublished studies, this book gives extended accounts of the major extreme right political parties or movements in a number of west European countries, looking both at their antecedents and also at their support and significance in the 1980s and early 1990s. The countries covered in detail are France, the Federal Republic of Germany (old and new regions), The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria. First published in 1983, this book reports on the results of a survey in thirteen areas of England where the National Front (NF) had previously gained significant levels of electoral support and examines the social and political histories of these areas to reveal not only who and was voting for the NF in the 1970s but also why.

Given that state responses are very much influenced & constrained by the particular form in which right-wing extremism is occurring, there is a presentation of a six-category typology of relevant types of the phenomenon, each category being defined by a relevant mix of individual, organizational, or ideological factors. There is a description of three principal types of state response, these being discussed in terms of content & with a view to their relevance to different forms of right-wing extremism. There is a discussion of some methods whereby the "success" of particular responses may be evaluated, & of the various complications of their implementation & evaluation. An overview of the general effectiveness of state responses arrives at the summary judgment that a liberal democratic state has the means to be effective in narrowly specific respects (eg, those depending on criminal sanction), but its scope for successful action in spheres such as that of ideology is less impressive. 1 Figure, 17 References. Der Verfasser fragt in seinem Beitrag danach, ob die Zu- und Abnahmen der Anhängerschaft des Rechtsextremismus in fünf westeuropäischen Ländern parallel verlaufen oder inwiefern sie unabhängige Phänomene darstellen. Die Untersuchung richtet sich auf folgende Parteien: Front National, Centrumdemokraten und Centrum Partij '86 (Niederlande), FPÖ, Die Republikaner und Vlaams Blok. Im folgenden vergleicht der Autor die Wahlerfolge der Parteien zwischen 1981 und 1995 und analysiert die Trends bei der Anhängerschaft der rechtsextremen Parteien in den fünf westeuropäischen Ländern auf der Datenbasis von Umfragen in den Jahren 1982 bis 1995 in Form von Zeitreihen. Durch eine Korrelations- und Hauptkomponentenanalyse ermittelt der Verfasser die Beziehungen zwischen den zeitlichen Entwicklungen in den verschiedenen Ländern. In seinem Resümee konstatiert der Autor, daß sich die Wellenhypothese nicht bestätigen läßt: Die Wahlabsichten zugunsten rechtsextremer Parteien folgen keinerlei einheitlichen Trends. Es lassen sich zwei Typen von Rechtsextremismus ermitteln: (1) "Flutartig" auftretende Parteien, deren Wähler sich nur vorübergehend der Partei anschließen (Niederlande, Deutschland) und (2) "Engagementsparteien", deren Wähler sowohl über eine gemeinsame politische Einstellung als auch über emotionale Beziehungen zu diesen Parteien verfügen (Frankreich, Belgien, Österreich). Both in the pre-war and the post-war period right-wing extremism was not very strong in Britain. Historians, political scientist and politicians have suggested a whole range of elements to explain this failure. In the light of this limited success the victory of the British National Party in an election of the Millwall district in the London Bourough of Tower Hamlets was indeed a surprise. lt raised the question whether this was the beginning of something similar to what happened earlier in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The very specific characteristics of the London East End and ofthe Millwall district in particular make the BNP victory however quite exceptional, and do not enable a generalization of the phenomenon. This is supported by the electoral results for the London Borough and District Council of May 5 1994. Yet one can still argue that the specific danger of the BNP is not its electoral potential, but the impact of its local activities on the relations between the ethnic groups in the neighbourhoods where it is present.
