La Agencia Europea de Medio Ambiente (AEMA), en colaboración con la Comisión Europea y los Estados miembros de la Unión Europea se encuentra involucrada en un ambicioso proceso de integración de las diferentes bases de datos e información ambienta, con el fin de crear una herramienta capaz de gestionar la puesta en marcha y la aplicación de las diferentes políticas europeas que afectan a los medios costero y marino en Europa. El desarrollo de todas aquellas políticas que afectan a este ámbito, entre otras la Directiva INSPIRE, la implantación de SEIS y las Recomendaciones para la Gestión Integrada de las Zonas Costeras (GIZC), requieren un mayor conocimiento y seguimiento de la información ambiental y de aspectos socio-económicos para la creación de análisis integrados que aporten respuestas integradas y sostenibles a las necesidades que se planteen. El seguimiento de la información ambiental precisa dotarse de desarrollos tecnológicos y sistemas de información eficaces, algunos buenos ejemplos ya están en funcionamiento a nivel europeo, como la Red Europea de Datos de Observación Marina en Europa (EMODNET) o el Sistema de Información de las Aguas Europeas (WISE). ; The European Environment Agency (EEA) in collaboration with the European Commission and the Member States of the European Union is involved in an ambitious process of integrating the existing databases on environmental information, in order to create a tool capable to manage the different European policies implementation and application affecting the coastal and marine environment in Europe. The policy development affecting this environmental context, amongst other initiatives the Directive INSPIRE, the implementation of SEIS and the Recommendations on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), require a higher knowledge and monitoring initiatives for the environmental information, as well as the socio-economic aspects which support the integrated analysis for integrated and sustainable responses to concrete needs. The environmental information monitoring requires efficient technological solutions and information systems, some of them are already operative at European level, such as the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODNET) and the Water Information System for Europe (WISE).

El presente artículo constituye una aportación al conocimiento de la problemática geopolítica, social y económica de la frontera estonio-rusa, desde el momento que se convierte en frontera exterior de la Unión Europea. En principio se establece una diferenciación entre las fronteras de derecho y de hecho en el actual proceso de globalización, y se pone de manifiesto la evolución histórica de las fronteras terrestres de Estonia, sobre todo la oriental, en litigio con Rusia. Posteriormente se define geográficamente y se analizan los efectos de esta frontera, así como la cooperación transfronteriza e integración regional que la Unión Europea ha emprendido a través de diversas iniciativas. ; The present article studies geopolitical, social and economic problems of the Estonian– Russian border on the moment where it turns to external bundary of the European Union. There are also taken on the task of explaining the meaning of boundaries de iure and de facto in the process of globalization, and the historical evolution of Estonian–Russian mainland boundaries. ; L'article traite problèmes géographiques, sociales et économiques de la frontière entre Estonie et Russie pour le moment quand elle se transforme à la frontière extérieure de la Union Européenne. Dans ce cas particulier, on réalise une étude de signification des frontières de iure et de facto en un processus de la globalisation, et l'évolution historique de la frontière entre Estonie et Russie.

Aquatic ecosystems –from marine and coastal to freshwater– are rich in biodiversity and home to a diverse array of species and habitats, providing numerous economic and societal benefits to the European population. Many of these valuable ecosystems are at risk of being irreversibly damaged by human activities and pressures, including pollution, contamination, hydromorphological alterations, invasive species, overfishing and climate change. These pressures threaten the sustainability of these ecosystems, their provision of ecosystem services and ultimately human well-being. AQUACROSS (Knowledge, Assessment, and Management for AQUAtic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services aCROSS EU policies – http://aquacross.eu) seeks to advance the application of ecosystem-based management for aquatic ecosystems in an effort to support the timely achievement of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy and other international conservation targets. In this regard, AQUACROSS aims to develop and test an assessment framework through a series of cases studies which considers the full array of interactions within aquatic ecosystems, including human activities. Following the Horizon 2020 Open Research Data Pilot, AQUACROSS addresses the challenge of bringing together newly generated as well as existing data used in the framework of the case studies, while at the same time supporting the project partners in terms of data integration and harmonisation. Through a lightweight CKAN-based information platform, we aim on one hand to support project partners in terms of discovery and data access (in interoperable formats), while on the other hand we offer operational support to open up raw and processed data for use in other contexts and disseminating these data and results. The latter is facilitated by the capabilities of the CKAN software which includes on-the-fly analysis and visualisation tools and enables easy data access through external software and tools such as R, QGis and Phyton. During this presentation we will report on the main lessons learned during this data integration exercise and focus on selected case study examples.

The AQUACROSS project was an unprecedented effort to unify policy concepts, knowledge, and management of freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems to support the cost-effective achievement of the targets set by the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020. AQUACROSS aimed to support EU efforts to enhance the resilience and stop the loss of biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems as well as to ensure the ongoing and future provision of aquatic ecosystem services. The project focused on advancing the knowledge base and application of Ecosystem-Based Management. Through elaboration of eight diverse case studies in freshwater and marine and estuarine aquatic ecosystem across Europe covering a range of environmental management problems including, eutrophication, sustainable fisheries as well as invasive alien species AQUACROSS demonstrated the application of a common framework to establish cost-effective measures and integrated Ecosystem-Based Management practices. AQUACROSS analysed the EU policy framework (i.e. goals, concepts, time frames) for aquatic ecosystems and built on knowledge stemming from different sources (i.e. WISE, BISE, Member State reporting within different policy processes, modelling) to develop innovative management tools, concepts, and business models (i.e. indicators, maps, ecosystem assessments, participatory approaches, mechanisms for promoting the delivery of ecosystem services) for aquatic ecosystems at various scales of space and time and relevant to different ecosystem types.
