Existing studies claimed that begging activities in South-western Nigeria are encouraged largely by cultural influences and uneven distri ution of the n tion"s resources. They further claim that the cultural activities re tr ce le to the or system which encourages mothers of twins to sing and dance for money. This paper investigates the claims by dr wing insights from the i le, Qur" n, f Literary Corpus, nd relev nt or proverbs. Findings show, among other things, that the claim about cultural influence, nonprovision of free education, and failure of the Nigerian government to break the cycle of poverty as the causes of alms-begging are mere excuses. The practice of polygamy with its attendant indiscriminate procreation among Nigerians is the major cause of alms-begging in the nation. It argues that any suggestion to improve the economy of Nigeria as well as economically empower individuals in the country will be a mirage or an exercise in futility if the problem caused by polygamy and indiscriminate procreation is not addressed.

Using the ethnography of communication approach as the research construct, an examination is made of the domain of writings and stickers on vehicles that communicate moral and cultural values to the type of reader who constitutes the major audience for this type of vehicle insignia. The data used were drawn from face-to-face interviews and questionnaires, as well as from writings on commercial vehicles in southwestern Nigeria. Findings show that writings on vehicles that convey moral and cultural values are veritable linguistic instruments for imparting edifying messages that can help in redirecting and reorientating the general public.

This paper x-rays the utilitarian functions and the nature of vehicle inscriptions and stickers in south-western Nigeria. It traces the history of the use of vehicle writings in Nigeria in general and the southwest in particular chronicling their long history of usage, and noting that it is a common phenomenon nowadays to come across vehicles, most especially commercial ones, heavily bedecked with an array of colourful inscriptions and stickers of different sizes and in different languages and that the posting of the moving emblems on vehicles has become so prevalent and so widespread that there is hardly an automobile on the highways in South-western Nigeria that does not transport them. Our study also reveals that vehicle insignia are meant to serve different purposes some of which include construction of religious messages, moral/philosophical messages, group/individual identity messages, warning and cautionary messages, humours, wits, ribaldry, advertising, politics and public enlightenment messages among several others. Our study further reveals that inscriptions and stickers serve as formidable communicative tools used to transmit diverse messages to the decoders.
