This article reports on research among 530 black industrial workers in Durban. A majority was unionised and had been involved in the pensions strikes 1981-1982. Comparisons are made with non-unionised unskilled migrant workers. The results suggest that black worker solidarity and determination during labour disputes is based on very practical and economic considerations, among union members and others

In 1981 both employers and the state were caught unawares when the largest concerted wave of black-worker strikes in Natal occured since 1973. The strikes were centred on contributory pensions schemes. Based on a study among 530 black workers in five affected companies, this article compares factors advanced by workers involved in the disturbances with those among a control group of 80 unaffected workers in nearly 50 companies in the region
