This guide is a practical tool for those involved in national legislative processes and in the design of labour laws, including government officials and representatives of workers and employers organizations. At the 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011, the ILO adopted Convention No. 189 and Recommendation No. 201 on decent work for domestic workers. Because domestic workers are often excluded from the protection of labour laws or are treated less favourably than other wage workers, implementing the basic principles embodied in Convention No. 189 calls for an assessment and strengthening of national labour laws. With the Convention No. 189 as its underlying framework, this volume provides specific guidelines and complements these with examples drawn from a wide range of existing national labour laws concerning domestic workers. The guides first part discusses alternative approaches to regulating domestic work, the nature and characteristics of domestic work, the forms of employment relationships that may exist, and their implications for regulation. Subsequent chapters focus on substantive areas of regulation, namely formalizing the employment relationship, working time, remuneration, fundamental principles and rights at work, protection from abuse and harassment, and protection of migrant domestic workers and child domestic workers.
Since its establishment 55 years ago, the Freedom of Association Committee has dealt with more than 2,500 complaints of infringement of freedom of association submitted to it either by governments or by organizations of employers or workers. Fully revised and updated, this digest brings together these decisions and principles in a concise form for easy reference and serves as a useful guide to the policies and actions to be adopted so as to ensure the fundamental principles of freedom of association. In addition, for each of the principles and decisions contained in the digest, the corresponding references are given to the previous digest or to the reports, cases and appropriate paragraphs of the Committee's reports, up to its 339th report (November 2005).

"The purpose of the Safety Recommendations contained in this publication is to provide information on the design, construction, equipment, training and protection of the crews of small fishing vessels with a view to promoting the safety of the vessel and the safety and health of the crews. The Safety Recommendations may also serve as a guide for those concerned with the safety of vessels used in support of aquaculture activities. They are not intended as a substitute for national laws and regulations but may serve as a guide to those persons concerned with framing such national laws and regulations. Unless otherwise stated, the provisions of the Safety Recommendations are intended to apply to new decked vessels of less than 12 m in length and new undecked vessels intended to operate at sea (as well as on oceans, rivers, lakes and dams, or on any body of water). Nevertheless, even where not otherwise stated, the competent authority should as far as reasonable and practical give consideration to the application of these provisions to existing vessels."--Page iv
